Hi Everyone,

Can you possibly help with some approximate costs and even recommendations for a local specialist?

I have a friend who owns a 2012 A3 Sport 2.0 TDI. He recently had an mot at audi where he was advised about a 'slight chatter' from the gearbox casing, but was not told that it needed attention. A couple of weeks later this turned into a 'loud grinding and knocking sound'. Car still driveable and just been inspected by audi who are advising 'major damage' and bill for just over £5k for new box etc.

This sounds majorly wrong on so many levels, not least the quote! Car is in the Coventry / Kenilworth area - can anyone recommend a good gearbox / vdub specialist in this vicinity who can be trusted to diagnose and quote fairly? I had an 8L S3 a few years back and used to use Midland VW in Cannock back then who were great but if there's anything nearer to Cov / Kenilworth / Birmingham that would be great.

Not sure on diagnosis or realistic prices if this did need a new / recon box?

Many thanks all in advance,

N

1 year out of warranty. You would have hoped for some goodwill from Audi. Which box is it?

It's a 6 speed box. Any recommendations locally or idea of realistic price?

Depends a lot on mileage and service history. If it's got full Audi history and had a gearbox oil change at the correct interval(s) I'd be chatting to the customer service manager at your local dealer and getting them to go in to bat for you with Audi customer services (although dealers now have considerable leeway to agree goodwill in their own right)

I had this not so long ago with a main dealer - gave them a video of dash cluster lighting flickering when it went in for service - was presented with a quote for £1k to replace the cluster on return, and no mention of a discussion with Audi UK! Wasn't impressed. Flickering turned to going out when driving at night, so went to Audi UK direct, who went to dealer. Couple of weeks later and some chats with local dealer and they agreed to cover 90% on goodwill. Was fitted at next service a few weeks later.

Our car has an immaculate service history with nothing missed/late.

There's a gearbox specialist guy in Northampton who can fix pretty much anything for £500 to £800 or so. Don't have his details but i think you will find him if you hunt about.
