S-Tronic Gearbox Failure

Hi all,

Just a quick note to say thanks for the input on this.

Never wanting to experience this again, I've now got a 2 year old A7 Black Edition which I'm really happy with, so as long as I can shift the S4, I can put this all behind me!

Good stuff; the A7s are generally very reliable.

Unless it's a BiTDI don't forget it will want gearbox oil at 38k too

So I'm considering a used 2015 1.4 cabriolet Sport with S-Tronic box as current SLK too low for self & wife both having mobility issues.
Car already has sign of abraded roof fabric a known issue with the previous model.
Loved the earlier cabriolet I had (2l S-Tronic), box no problem but disgusted with the negative response to my complaint about fraying of roof fabric that is still obviously a problem.
Me thinks BMW 1/2 Series Cab. is the route given so much uncertainty over Audi, trouble is I don't want to be branded a BMW driver, so many of them are just pushy yobs..

Just bought a 2009 S4 and have the gearbox and parking brake malfunction warning lights. Has anyone found someone to rectify this cheaply?
Has anyone had a go at claiming from Audi on the basis this is an inherent defect? Reading all the incidents of this problem it seems to me it is an inherent defect.

Mechatronic failure is pretty common & while it makes sense that a properly serviced box will not suffer from this, it's far from true...

I see that you are selling or have sold the S4, but the following bit is interesting;

Having worked in these circles, the above statment appears to be an admission of guilt / responsability / however you want to word it. An authorised repairer simply can't throw that value of parts into a vehicle without inspecting the health of the directly related components - it's a bit like throwing new pistons into wrecked bores & saying tuff s***. This is one of the drivers behind authorised repairers being reluctant or unable to replace certain components & going down the whole assembly route.

Beyond that, the same statement is also an admission of improper diagnosis which puts the ball back in their court. Sounds to me like the dealer well & truly f***** up & is trying to walk away from the responsability (cost to rectify).

Ref the query on a 2009 car - think there’s bob all hope of contributions from Audi at this points. If the gearbox has reached 14 years (assuming it’s even the original) that’s not a bad result for an early car (assuming miles are typical for its age)

My S5 had a mechatronics repair (there’s a bit including PCB, valves, software update) which was about £1500. No box removal required. Local Indy did the repair. Depends on the nature of the fault. If the car’s been driven with slipping clutches etc then you’ll be looking at a full box out overhaul and circa £3.5k upwards

The place in Bristol is still most likely the best source of repair knowledge but my Indy was actually cheaper for the mechatronics repair

Mmm - what a gear knob I am, should have looked beyond the date on the last post.....
