Recently purchased a 58 plate 2009 model Audi A3 1.8 TFSI with 160bhp.

Car has covered 80,000 miles and has full Vw group service history. Mechanically the car feels sound, no clutch slipping, no rattles or knocks, gearbox doesn't feel bad considering age and mileage.

I've read these cars can get carbon build up in the intake manifold, affecting power, cold starts and idling issues. It feels a little lumpy when idling cold. This carbon build up needs cleaning manually or walnut blasting. So far I've been quoted 350 to 400 for walnut blasting at GT Autos in South Yorkshire, and 450 for manual cleaning at Awesome GTI in Manchester.

Now the question... This engine is apparently very tunable and I would love to get a bit more torque and power out of it, nothing drastic. I would be very happy with around 190 or 200bhp. Most of the remaps take you much higher.

So am I been silly for wanting to tune my car?

I think it would be wise to let Audi give it a full service, and get the carbon clean done. Looking at 700 quid before I've even touched a remap.

Suggestions welcome.

You seem to be heading in the right direction by making sure its mechanically sound, just make sure you read the carbon cleaning thread in general gassing even though it was a different method used.
I don't see the harm in wanting a remap, lots of people do it including myself in the past.
As long as the car is in good mechanical condition, and the remap is done by someone with a good reputation then go for it.
If you drive it sensibly afterwards you wont get any problems.

Not talking about that terraclean bullst. This is what happens on a direct injection engine :

I'm not getting most of the symptoms associated with the issue, GT Autos say they can plug diagnostic machine in and will be able to tell if I might need the walnut blasting done .
