Hi just wondering if anyone has tried fitting one of these panel filters to their monaro, and if so did they get any change to their induction sound?

I'm not really interested in fitting a cone filter or hacking up the air box.

I have a cold air kit on my Monaro which replaces the standard air filter, and box. I have to say it doesn't make much difference to the induction sound.
When I first fitted the kit to the car, I put my foot down and the sound of the standard exhaust changed, the tone was deeper,so they do get more air into the engine..which is what you really want.
Now the car is fitted with headers ect I only hear the exhaust!!!
If you just put a performance air filter into a standard air box, I can't see it making any difference. In fact I wouldn't bother.
The bottom line really is to fit a full cold air kit.

Fair enough. I test drove the v8 m3 and focus RS mk3 before choosing the HSV, and they both had very noticeable induction sounds. Just wondered if anyone had achieved something similar on these. Not that it needs it though!

My impression of the Monaro is that even when they are completely standard, (and mine was when I bought it) they are noisy cars, tyre roar, gear box and diff whine ect . These noises are loader than a BMW.
So on a BMW I suspect that induction noise will be easier to hear
Mind you, if you lift the bonnet up on my Monaro and get some one to rev the engine you certainly can hear the air getting sucked in, but out on the open road no at all.

I suspect the m3/RS channel induction sound into the cabin whereas the monaros sound proofing hides it because its loud enough without it.
I actually find the monaro to be more refined overall. Yes its more basic (and fun), but I have no tyre roar and no whines. At slow speeds it roars like a lion and at motorway speeds its the quietest and most refined car I have ever driven. Though to be fair I have a custom cat back system so it probably has different characteristics to the systems you can buy.

Only exceptions to this is that you can hear a donk at low speed acceleration even though I've changed the diff oil and checked for cv play. I suspect the doughnut rubber design in the prop add to the unwanted lash because of their retro design.

Make a hole in the bulkhead and you'll hear the induction just fine...but mostly the valvetrain!

you can always drill an air box obviously pre filter and away from the engine side so the engine heat does not get into it , it worked well on my senator

Yes, the donk/clunk is part of the Monaro trait.
As far as i'm aware that's normal for one of these car's, especially since the diff is bolted directly to the chassis.
TBH my car is terrible for that, however next month a new pedders half shaft should sort most of that out!
As for diff whine, (which mine does) I forgot to mention my car has a 390.1 rear end, which are prone to a little bit of a whine

I not sure why, but I really really really... hate valvetrain noise...
Could I put up with a solid lifter big block? ummmmm

It's odd they've decided to mount it in such a way. It would be interesting to know if anyone has found a way to eliminate it completely as there's no obviously perished items to replace.

Throwing my hat into the ring, I don't think it's the rubber in the prop shaft, mine has a one piece drive shaft now and it makes exactly the same clunk it used to make with the old 2 piece with a perished centre bush.

It certainly does give it that 'agricultural' feel hehe I think it's just the general slack in the rear end (ahem) and I don't know of anyone that's managed to completely stop it?

My K&N panel makes a fair bit of noise - although it is attached to a SvedeSpeed OTR laugh

Actually the diff is mounted to the rear C sub frame, which is itself carried in rubber mounts to the chassis. The rear diff mounting plate has a rubber mount in between it and the chassis, so there should be little clunk transmission from there.

The only 3.9 diffs that whine, were some of the aftermarket makes, the genuine GM items do not whine if correctly assembled.

As far as I've experienced, the clunking is the result of a poorly designed (IMHO) OEM LSD. The "Monaro clunk"is remedied by the installation of a Tru Trac, or similar, aftermarket diff centre.

There is also some play in the axle splines and cv joints which will get worse with wear and this can exacerbate the condition.

There is one way to avoid clunk... Keep your right foot planted!

It has flex but no lash, its there to help with compliance ( and probably a cheaper design than a traditional UJ.
