I have had 2003 ml270cdi since new and done 148,000 miles. Up till 2 weeks ago had had no real problems and would happily accelerate to 90mph and beyond if required. Parked car at airport for a week and when we set off home it seemed to be ok to about 50 but then lost oomph, struggled up to 75mph and would not go any faster with my foot to the floor. I tried the cruise control to see if that might accelerate but made no difference. On this drive home I noticed it also seemed to surge a few times as it accelerated.

One other thing which may well be unconnected, the internal lights seemed to have an intermittent fault, not working then being fine next day.

Any thoughts appreciated!

Have you checked the turbo ?
It's common for TDI turbos at high mileage to suffer from sooting up, it could be going into limp mode?
Have you checked for boost leaks? This again could be losing power.
cat blocked up?

Get it read, it could be the cam sensor not talking to the crank sensor this makes it go into limp without necessarily throwing up an engine management light.

had it checked out, flagged up faulty air flow sensor, replaced and all seems to be back to normal.
