The Golf GTi lease thread.
Discussion
I think I've forgotten out to drive a front wheel drive... had powerful beemers for so long now on a damp road I just can't get the Golf off the line quickly without the traction control cutting in.
The handling does seem well sorted and good fun on the back roads. Having done a few runs in eco and normal there doesn't actually seem to be a lot of difference in fuel economy maybe one or two mpg at most.
Maybe I'm getting old but sports mode or at least the gearbox in sport just seems a little too aggressive at times - it doesn't get out of fourth whilst staying within the speed limit -I noticed on the motorway when I took my foot off the accelerator it did shift to 6th but as soon as I touched the accelerator again it dropped down to fourth.
I miss the iDrive in my old BM, and find the touch screen a little fiddly when on the move but other than that I do the think the GTI is a well sorted hatch and brilliant value for money on the deal we got.

It doesn't seem to drive anything like an auto I've ever driven. It may take a while to get used to. Reviews are great for dsg so maybe just me. Would have been good to have a mode midway between normal and sport as you either get too soon an up change or too late. Going to take a while to get used to this or going to drive in manual mode.
I have to agree that the media unit is very fiddly whilst on the move when using the touch screen. I was having a look through the car system menus today playing around with the interior light dimmers.
Here's a question, hope it's not just me being a numpty but I can't set the cruise control for the life of me. Truth be told I've not read the manual yet...anyone played with there's yet? Whatever cruise control button I press on the left of the steering wheel it just says ACC deactivated.
I've used cruise control on plenty of modern and older cars so it's not as if I'm totally new to it.

As per the above the cruise is pretty easy from the steering wheel. Adaptive cruise is a game changer - the only thing I've found is it's changed when I move out to over take as if you enter the "set distance from car in front zone" it starts breaking for you just before you pull out.
There are two modes to the cruise - regular cruise and adapadtive but it's clear on the MFD which one has been selected.
Looking at the computer judging by my driving over the first thousand miles I should be able to cover about 16k before the first oil change is needed.

yes -- road tax paid by the owner i.e the finance company, not the lease broker.
and yes heated seats been standard for about 2 yrs now.
Question regarding ALA or directgap....anyone got preference over either? I have directgap quoting £99 and ala quoting £94....cover levels similar.

What value of cover are you looking at? I thought most people are paying 120-150 for gap?
directgap are offering unlimited cover for a standard £99, ALA offering 10k cover at £121 but pricematching directgap and beating by 20% of difference. I am not getting my deposit covered as my terms are 1+23.
ALA explained that
"Just to confirm, if a Contract Hire car is written off during the agreement you would not need to cover the full new car cost. Instead the finance company will issue you with an early termination settlement figure. This is made up of the market value of the car at the time of the total loss, which is paid by your motor insurer, and up to 100% of the outstanding rental payments due under the contract.
The GAP insurance will cover your outstanding rental payments and top up the market value settlement from the insurer, if it is not enough according to the finance company.
For example, if you were 6 months into the contract and the car is a total loss, you have 17 payments outstanding at that point, which would be covered by the GAP policy. If your insurer pays £22,000 for the car but the finance company think the car is worth £23,000, we would also cover the £1,000 shortfall."

Maybe a little biased, as PH work with ALA as our gap insurance provider, but Simon at ALA is a top bloke and based out of the little Yorkshire town I grew up in.Though thankfully have never had to use my gap insurance, so can't commit on that part.
