ooo big fan of that colour, I think dark red/maroon and dark green colours are really under-rated.

Been a while since I updated here so here goes.

So I'm on 5K miles now and it's been plain sailing so far. The only recent blip has been that the electric display in the middle of the gauages today decided to die. Tried a few on and offs but still nothing.

Called my local dealer but can't get in for 2 weeks. I did ask if these things were covered under warranty and was told they usually are but they can't say for certain until they have the car.

I've just hit 9500, completed a 4500 Euro trip without a hitch.Actually surprised how much the boot holds , I averaged 39mpg on my motorway runs through France and Spain on the return leg , car now showing 35mpg since start. Front tyre wear is exceeding the rear so decided on a f-r change, car goes in tomorrow but had a call today asking if tyre pressure sensors are wheel specific , well as I have a slow leak on the nsf I can say yes. They seem to think the only way of changing is to change the tyres or stems not the wheels as they had an Audi in which threw up dash warnings after the change. Anyone with previous experience?

I'm still not sold on the dsg , I've tried all combinations. Also a shame the paddles are wheel mounted as fixed positioning would be better on a spirited run in manual mode. I like the speed limiter , not had one of these since a 90's merc, especially useful with new laws on euro speeding especially in crafty France.

Pretty sure it uses ABS for the flat tyre warning, so you can mix and match regardless.

You are correct , tyres weren't as bad as I thought so going to wait another 3k , currently 6mm front and 7mm rears.

PS no fogs on UK cars despite the spec sheet

It looked that colour on the configurator no? And none of the GTD/I/R have fogs now? Hell the R even has Mk7 GTD skirts/sill lips!

The GTi/D do have fogs but a batch were built without.

The colour is horrendous.

After 10k with the awful dsg I finally took it to vw to look at. Got it back today and the car is transformed. Turns out 1st & 2nd had issues and also downshifts. Software was flashed and updated , initial impressions are it's now what I was expecting. Changes are now much smoother and the jerkiness on slowing down has gone. Roll on the next 29k miles as I don't want to be paying for the 40k gearbox service.

Unfortunately no cure for the ste satnav but it should be a more pleasurable drive.

For the first service I was quoted £211 inc vat.

We're coming up to 5k miles now and it's all good.

There was a period when we had the car in eco mode (when we lived in London) and it's dreadful. Didn't see any significant change in fuel consumption but it made the car pretty horrible to drive. We played with custom settings for a while but for the last few months it's just been in sport mode and it's so much the better for it. In eco mode the eco measure display (whatever it's called) does have some (limited) novelty value - seeing if you can get a complete blue circle completed...

Early impressions of lack of grip in the wet seem to have gone away - maybe it was the fact that the tyres were brand new but much less of an issue now.

It's a cracking car - the only downsides we see are from leasing are that you end up with a base spec car - so no leather, sunroof, rear camera etc - sure we could have specc'ed them but as we all know that's not the way to do leasing. Mrs rejn is of the view that we shouldn't lease again but buy a nearly new fully loaded car next time so she has all the toys.

Overall the Golf GTI is a cracking car though.

I don't miss any of the extras you have listed at all, I think the spec is quite decent as it is at the moment. Rear camera on a golf?! Not required when you have sensors. Leather? Meh. Colder in winter. Sunroof would be pleasant but as you say, you could probably spec it or have a lotus / Z4 for the weekends smile

Yup - I agree spec is pretty good as standard.

For happiness and peace in our family car we'll probably just not go down the lease route again. Which is a shame as it's financially a great option.

Is that first service cost of £211 for a 10k service or a variable 1st service?

Interesting comments on eco mode - i find it perfect for commuting but agree it's crap for any form of spirited driving.

I'm just over 10k on the clock now and looks like oil change will be due at 17k; long term avg is 39mpg.

I still love it and whilst I'm a BMW fanboy I'd have another GTI again over another 3 series.

Go for the 2 year service pack. From memory it was £260 for my R.

£211 was for the variable first service. Mine says due at 16k.

I'll try and find out if I can get the 2 service pack as that will cover my mileage.

According to the inspection report the oil level is still showing as full. I've used 15% of pads all around.

If I recall the VW 2 year service pack was £287 and only covered first two fixed services (10 and 20k) and did not apply to variable regime.

I also think it car has to be under 10k when service pack is purchased

Anyone got a deal in the last month or so? Researching options for a GTI for the wife.

It's either lease a new one or a second hand MK5...

Probably 2k down, 9+23 either 8k or 10k miles.

Seen £214 over on contract hire and leasing

May go PCP though but I expect they cant beat that...
