Morning folks,

I bought the above vehicle 19 months ago with 29k miles on the clock, it has now done 70k miles. At the weekend I got the flashing yellow coil light and the engine went into limp mode. I took it into my local garage on Tuesday morning who told me that it was an EGR fault code that was showing up. He wiped the code however and the car ran like new for a few days. I did a bit of research online and it seems like EGR faults with the mk6 golf are very common, however due to the inaccessibility on these models replacement costs can be more than £1000. The light came on last night whilst on a long drive home but it's back to normal this morning. I have taken some advice from various sources and come up with the following plan:

1. Spend £6 on some Wynn's extreme diesel system cleaner from halfords.

If this doesn't work . . .

2. Book the car in for a Terraclean at my nearest agent

If this doesn't work . . .

3. Speak to my local tuning garage to see if they can suggest any re-map or EGR delete programmes that might work

If this doesn't work . . .

4. Speak to my local VW dealer to try and negotiate a reduced price to replace (a lot of people online have had 100% part and 50% labour costs covered, leading to a bill of only £250 or so).

If none of this works I'll take the hit and pay full price for the repair. It'll be a sore one, but when putting 30k miles per year on a car you need to expect some big bills I suppose - and I'm still much better off than running a company car, even with this potential bill.

If anyone has any advice or tips they would be much appreciated, and I'll keep you updated with my progress - in case anyone else has the same issue.

Cheers,
Davie

CR140 engine?

I recall a thread on here where a guy changed the EGR diy, think it was on a SEAT.

Ive not heard of any miracle products capable of cleaning an egr valve, they normally need complete removal to clean properly but this usually results in a good working egr valve again.
Personally i would avoid the terribleclean from what ive read lately.
Ive not touched one on this engine, i used to have a 2.0 tdi 140 bhp engine in an A3 and i couldnt even find it let alone clean it.
I dont see it as a diy job unless your experienced with the spanners, its either pay someone to remove and clean or replace.

Hi David
what was your final outcome on this problem as yes I am in the same club along with hundreds of other people as i can gather. I had an oil change by a mechanic which i believed not to be the correct oil and certainly didn't seem to be the correct filter as I've just replaced all myself, two weeks after the oil change/mot the egr valve light came on (i think the code said ego circuit low) and went into lymph mode. Ive changed all filters and oil and now have to decide what to do next. The oil which i took out was pretty black and the oil filter pretty dirty after only 1000 miles so i suspect its either not been done or been done wrong as the filter was not the same dimensions. I was hoping that this had caused the egr valve warning code and it may correct itself but i think to be honest it might have been a coincidence or the egr valve was on its way out anyway. Seems unfair that VW decide to put in a part you can't clean like all the models before this one and put it in such a ridiculous place. I might even consider having it blanked and remapped if its possible.
So David if you can let me know what your outcome was that would be great,

Modern synthetic oils turn black within a few hundred miles in a diesel.

Out of interest have you had the emissions update carried out as this is known to cause EGR issues and VW will warrant for 24 months from the date of the update.

Just get it mapped out.
I've had it done on many 2.0 CR 140 Engines.

a remap, dpf delete and egr off usually but you can just do the egr

I ended up selling the car to WBAC. I was offered a very good deal on a friend's XF 3.0d so I chopped in the Golf.

After a few long runs and a few fill ups of premium diesel the issue seemed to disappear though to be honest. Might be worth a go.

All the best

I’m not sure what the future holds regarding the legalities of dpf removal but it’s something we have done on a family 140bhp cr engined A3 recently.
Dpf removed and mapped out was £350, we did so as it was starting to show problems with doing shorter journeys.
Not had it mot’d yet so I hope its going to be ok.

Hi all,

I recently purchased a. Golf Mk6 2.0 TDI GT it's 2009
It has 96k on the clock 1 previous owner and FSH its in amazing condition inside and out has the cambelt and water pump done at 87k. No mot scares
I drove it home and the glow plug light started to flash and loss of power.
I used my obd scanner and tourqe app it stated p0299 power train control module ..
I took it back to the garage they investigated and said it was egr cooler so had that replaced And I went away it then did the same thing glow plug light and loss of power. They are looking into this again. I wanted to know should I just try to get my money back or once they have fixed it keep the car I've read these egr coolers and bits are expensive so if they fix this the car should be trouble free ?
I really like the cAr it's in great condition I'm thinking it's best to have this one with all the bits repaired ..can this cause further unknown damage do you recommend I keep it once repaired .. is there anything else I should be worried about.?

I should say they are doing all repairs for free

Thanks for all your answers help in advance
