A friend is looking to buy a Golf, the 150bhp 1.4, ex demo or very low miles, I'm assisting him but any PH wisdom from current owners or those in the know would be appreciated, can you help please?

I've got a GTD but did test drive that engine, its fantastic for a 1.4 petrol. Super smooth and very impressive throttle response. MPG good too. There are a lot of rave reviews from owners with them.

I've had a manual golf and a DSG Leon, it's a great engine responsive when it needs to be and frugal with it, far better than the diesel and genuinely turns in better than my wife's gti.

Bit late clearly but any questions let me know, I'm two years and 42k miles in. There's a long thread I started when looking for one. Only thing is I'd totally disagree with above, throttle response is THE worst feature. I live with it, but get in a NASP car and or manual/torque converter and its night & day, 'they all do that sir', grrr.......

Thanks acme, throttle response seemed great, I drove on a mix of B roads and motorways and loved it, I know they updated these in July this year and I imagine that there's ongoing fettling that we dont get to hear about

My only gripe would be road noise on coarse surfaces, for a car lauded for its refinement it was a little disappointing

Have you noticed any differences using higher octane fuel?

That's an interesting comment. I've had a number of conversations with the dealer & on here with people since. The best example is where you're coming into a roundabout hold back as you do so observing a gap or allowing the roundabout to clear & the applying throttle, at times it seems dangerously slow to engage, classic small engine turbo lag I assume. However I do wonder if the DSG emphasises it frankly. I also have an old car with an inline six which is NASP, feels like the throttles hard wired to your brain in comparison.

Anyhow, as a daily also used heavily for work it's superb in my eyes. It's frugal when commuting in traffic etc, but you can have fun when conditions allow. I test drove back to back with the 2.0 TDI, and you can really feel the 80kg that are missing from the nose.

Yep I've experimented with 99 RON, didn't make an ounce of difference, nor to the throttle I'm afraid!

I noticed throttle delay on a Golf a few years ago (Mark 4, petrol, manual) and it put me off Golfs frankly. It was so annoying it spoilt the car and overshadowed all the good features.
They may have improved things in later models, but I agree that a turbo (with lag) and a DSG may make things worse again. ( The Mark2 I had before that was great. :-( confused)
The DSG shouldn't delay though - it's supposed to change in a fraction of a second with the next gear you need already set up. If it's changing down (pre-selecting) late in the roundabout approach you describe then there may be a fault with a sensor or something.
