08 / 09 Golf D questions please?

Looking at changing my Freelander for a golf. The idea being, something newer, smaller and much more cost effective to run.
I keep seeing CR being mentioned with the TDIs and have read it may be a more reliable unit?
I was thinking 08 / 09 2.0 TDI or GT. I have searched but find the mass array of engines and codes baffling.
Would it be preferable to opt for a newer shape car or are the 06 / 07 cars just as good / better?
Any help appreciated.

The Mk6 with the CR engine is the best one to go for, so 09 or newer. Far smoother than the PD unit as fitted to the Mk5 and seems more reliable. I ran a 2011 2.0 TDI 140 for a while and it was totally faultless just eating up the miles trouble free.
