I am thinking about getting an Audi SQ5, but want to get some PHers views on what you think of it? Especially if you own one or know of people that have done significant mileage in one? What is the on going cost like?

Thanks for your comments

Take it you mean on going cost? We have run one for just over 2 years, it's my wife's daily but gets a lot of use from me as well, done around 35,000 miles now. We are on our third set of tyres, Dunlops now after two sets of Pirelli's (reckon the Dunlops are better), it's had one service costing @£400 and returns around 35-40mpg on average, oil consumption is remarkably low.

It's a pretty good all rounder, performance is as you would expect, ride is ok (ours is on the lower profiles) and fit, finish etc all good, but I think the tech is showing its age somewhat. My biggest criticism is the steering feel, not much idea of what is going on which is hardly confidence inspiring, but it's the family hack so I can live with that. If it was my 'all things in one car' I would explore the Macan, X35d and a few others if I was you, but it is a very good all rounder with pretty reasonable running costs.

Thanks for the comments Blue, yeh I was thinking about long term cost and more generally how is to live with. Just trying to get some experienced opinions that have got over the initial fun of owning one!

It's very easy to live with mate and in sport mode is a hoot in a straight line. It all depends what you want and what you're prepared to spend, if you favour handling/steering above quality of the interior then I think the X35d would get my vote in this class, but it's marginal and I personally prefer the look of the Audi. If your budget will stretch to a Macan then drive one, I did a Porsche experience day recently and was mightily impressed.

thanks for the advice, I need a bit of a wagon - 2 dogs, 1 toddler and planning the next. I am just not prepared to go for something entirely boring. SQ5 stands out for me at my budget, sadly the Macan is too much for me.

Ive got one
Dead fast in a straight line
Brakes not good enough to slow you down really if you are "pushing on"
35mpg average and I don't hang around
New tyres all round needed every 20k miles, but I don't hang around. 21 inch wheels so £800 a time for 4
Gearbox brilliant
Exhaust sound amazing, I've got drive select and tech pack high
I really quite like it.....

Done about 30k miles in 18 months. Nothing has gone wrong, no rattles or anything it's good. Even took it to the French alps and back. It's not very good driving around corners but I guess it's not designed to drive like a Porsche....

make sure you try out a car seat (or two) in the back as the one i have rear facing eats into the front passenger seat meaning reduced room for the front passenger.
Saying that i loved mine when i had it. But it will be a squeeze with two dogs (assuming medium size) and two kids.

Thanks DMS, what made you swap away from the SQ5? Did you ever have any issues with yours? What sort of mileage had you done?

i was all set to keep it for 5 years (had bought the warranty extension) but my head got turned on a deal for an RS model towards the end of my PCP term.
I had done about 15k. No major issues with it except for the EGR valve that gets stuck - took about two weeks to get a replacement. MPG is good for what it is and is very similar to what you can get from the 2l version (im driving one now as my current motor is in for warranty work).
best forum for you to read through reviews is www.myaudiq5.com
there are plenty about so make sure you get the spec you want.

I nearly missed this car and it was only spotting one after leaving a Land Rover Dealer (Where I had gone in to look at an advertised on the web in stock Disco, which wasnt in stock and the sales person was crap). Drove straight to my Audi garage who know me fairly well as the previous two company hacks had been serviced by them.

Test drive booked, took the wife back a few days later and was stunned at its speed in a straight line, loved the note from the back (yeah its fake but so what), was big enough to tow my fairly large 5 star caravan, fit the dog and two kids and still return me 35mpg.

Was delivered brand new 4 weeks later, nice spec in Sepang with Hi Tech Pack and 21" rims - didnt go for the Plus pack as at the time I couldnt see what the extra ££ was really covering that I needed - I think now you can only order Plus SE.

6.6k miles into her and she has been great. Long drives up north, long tows through france, and still makes me giggle when I drop it and go.

Only down side, a NIP received this week for doing 90mph in a 70 - a12 in Essex. CHEERS NOT.

Agree with all the comments above about brakes not as confidence inspiring when pushing hard, and handling is typicially SUV, just a bit tighter than say a Range Rover Sport (which Ive had also).

Any other questions fella, just ask.
