Hey,

I have a golf mk 6 gti which I bought last year and earlier in the year I got a new job with a company car so I don't want to keep the gti as it's not really needed.

Dont get me wrong, love the car but no point me having 2 cars.

I've had it on sale on autotrader for around 3 months and to be honest it was just a waste of time - No phone calls or anything.

I am only the 2nd owner, it's a 60 plate, carbon grey, beautiful car no scratches, dents or issues - Full vw service history with a recent service and inspection detailing no faults - Advertised on autotrader with price similar to those around, even abit cheaper than some of the others.

Is the market just crappy right now to sell these types of cars?

Most people spending that kind of money will buy from a dealer for piece of mind. I just sold my 59 plate Skoda Yeti which had been up for sale for 5 weeks. Sold to the one and only person who got in touch with me.

If it won't sell then the price is too high.

Put it on an eBay auction, 99p start and I'll bet it will sell!

Seriously though, I've used ebay (classified ad not auction) with good results. Write a good ad, good pictures, be honest with any issues, be sensible with the price and it'll sell.

Can't find it on Trader.

Can you link me? Will take a look and see if I can see anything amiss.

I took it off AT - Couldn't justify spending another £50 after spending £160 with 0 phone calls lol

It is now on ebay; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/-/112179376932?

I'm sure you mean well but I wouldn't buy a car from someone who's put a HID kit in reflector headlight housings and claims it provides an "OEM Xenon look". It really doesn't.

HID's get a really bad rating because 90% of people who put HID's in a reflector headlight dont use the correct bulbs and cause stupid glare

With the right kit, bulb and colour - They do look similar to Oem Xenons.

Afraid I'll have to echo the above on the headlights; they are viewed as a bit tacky/cheap. Either remove them or simply don't mention them.

Psychologically 10,250 is a lot more than 9995 so get it down. It's a pretty plain specification in a market where a lot of people want 18s, leather etc. so it will need to be keen.

Photos are just 'OK'; the lighting is a bit funky and the background looks pretty busy. Give it a good clean, find a nice neutral background and get some new snaps. Some better ones of the interior probably wouldn't go amiss either (currently looks like the dash is covered in silicon spray).

Maybe detail its service history a little further, saying 'full history' is all well and good but every moron with two stamps in his book says the same thing so if the history is really spot on make a feature of it. Good tyres? List brands and tread depths, make anyone reading it think "this is well maintained and I won't have to spend more money".

My belief is that photos make a huge difference. If you are not a photographer yourself, do you have a mate who is handy behind the lens? It can make the advert stand out against the others. Your advert also has a lot of text to be in 3 paragraphs / sections, try spacing it out so its easier to read and will make the selling points stand out. In the past, I have gone as far to separate into areas such as interior, exterior, engine, history etc with individual headings.

This is just an observation; your ad says MOT till next year, the online searches say it's due next week, and www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/ can't find the reg at all ... could this put people off?

I find EBay is much better for selling cars than AT, I advertised my 2009 BMW 330i on AT a while ago without a call. I gave EBay a go and it sold within an hour, if you price a car right it will sell, every one wants top dollar for their car and sometimes that could be just out of reach of someone who would buy it for a lower price, lower your to just under 10k and I'd say you should have a few nibbles at it

  • Revert back to standard
  • Offer the bits as an extra if they want them
  • Fix mot comment above
  • Better bigger pictures
  • Confirm its got the modified cam-chain assembly (May 2010 I think)

OP, like others have said take out the HID's and put some H7 halogen bulbs back in. As DrG said above, give it a good clean including cleaning the chrome exhaust tips and get some better pictures with a plain background on the ad.

Re: the cam chain tensioner, if your car was built after May 2010 it should have the revised cam chain tensioner fitted from the factory. Your ad says the car was registered on 29/10/2010, therefore, it should have the revised tensioner, however, you can check your car's build date by contacting your local VW dealer's parts department, give them your reg and they should be able to tell you. If you do have the revised tensioner note this fact on the ad as that will help prospective buyers as they will then know they haven't got to either chip you for circa £500 and them then having to pay to get it replaced. Also detail the FVWSH but don't over do it.

The DVLA tax and MOT checker is saying your MOT is only to 29/10/2016, where as TAX is to 1/10/2017. If your MOT is due to expire shortly that won't help a sale, unless it's been done and hasn't been updated on the DVLA website checker? Also TAX means nothing as when you sell the car you will receive a pro rata refund of what's not been used and the buyer will have to tax the car themselves.

There are a few GTI's for sale and yours is a pretty basic spec, sorry but it's the truth.

Good luck with the sale.

Hi Guys,

Thank you for your advice above - The MOT does expire this week but it was booked in for tomorrow therefore I advertised it for next year as I would have had it completed before the sale.

Spoken to VW and they have confirmed it was fitted with the revised tensioner so i have added that also.

In regards to the photo's, I will give it a nice clean this week and try get some pictures taken in a less busy area.

I have a very similar car (3dr white) with same spec, mileage etc..... I've not tried selling privately, but I did get a trade in figure when I was looking at changing (bmw 135) and was offered £7k in trade in for it.

I think sadly many people who would previously have bought cars of this age/ mileage/ price are now tempted in to newer cars on finance/ hp/ pcp/ lease deals.

personally I would also change the VW badges back to standard colour, to some people they may give the wrong impression, people get funny about "modified" cars

My only comment is the price should start with an 8. WBAC quote 7,500-i realise that is low but people check and just won't bid at a certain point. If you want shod of it you will have to price accordingly. A friend sold a 65 plate golf 1.4T in mint condition, 9k miles for 12k, cost him 23k. You want 10k. I know which one id rather have if you get my drift smile

WBAC offered me £5.5k for my 2009 Yeti. I honk that's why I got virtually no interest at £8k despite it being fairly priced compared to others on the market. Luckily the only person to call turned up and bought it without even haggling.

I'm one of them! Will be looking for a MK6 to replace my MK5 in the new year. Its rare, but I like to keep cars past the normal 2-3 year PCP length.

A new one is only 22k.

I cannot see how a 6 year old 80k mile car is still worth 10k privately.
