A friend was at the game last night.

Immediately before he ate the pie, the Arsenal fans were all singing something about "If you eat a pie we'll give you a wave", then "If you eat 2 pies..." and then "...3 pies...".

He then ate a pie. I say ate. He inhaled it, judging by the TV pictures.

I am certainly now very aware of Sun Bets being "a thing" and also I am aware that I will not be using Sun Bets

If he hadn't eaten the pie would he have been investigated? Once the odds were out there and offered his action (or inaction) would have influenced the result.

Plus it was a pasty, not a pie.

They still paid out on it. If the camera had not been pointing in his direction at the time, noone would have known.

Shame this happened as it was a good game last night. They certainly put up more resistance than I expected.

Does this mean that they should actually go ahead and investigate whoever it is that is in charge of choosing where to point the cameras during the broadcast?

No I mean it was probably picked out as good 'image' showing the contrast between grass roots and premiership football as you would never have seen a premiership player doing that sort of thing. The director will have people watching the feeds for that sort of thing - banners in the crowd, something 'unusual', etc.

Unless the cameraman and the director was in on the bet as well I doubt it was anything but a coincidence.

I find this really sad.
I have no interest in Football, but listening to Radio 2 this morning, it was a great story of Sharks vs minnows, a real "feel good" story in football with Arsenal donating 50k to the club( i had not heard about the pie incident), but now it's been potentially tainted.

Football has been tainted for a long time in this country and some fat bloke eating pies for a bet is the least of its worries. Made me laugh when I heard he'd resigned especially after all the adulation he had been receiving this morning for doing it. You couldn't make it up. rofl

I thought this too. How does a company set odds on the action of one person? It inevitably going to lead to allegations of "fixing" whether he chose to eat the pie (pasty) or to not eat the pie.

I'm glad he ate the pie. The Sun publicly roasted him for being a fat lad playing footy with a bet, he should be allowed to cost em 30k or whatever it was. Seems pretty funny to me.

I'm sure there's far worse goes on in the football world.

Bit of a daft thing to do but it doesn't seem worth hanging the bloke out to dry over.

That would require a very strong washing line.

He sounds like a lovely bloke - also asked to leave the club in 2013 after jumping the advertising boards and head butting a rival fan who was giving him some mouth over his size.

Coincidence that their sponsor last night was The Sun Bets?

I would laugh if Mr Shaw revealed they paid him for the stunt biggrin
