Sorry editing while you posted. It's worse than what the S5 will be, as the S5 will be reproducing/amplifying the sound rather than the Golf which makes a noise that doesn't sound like the engine.

The reason why they don't put the mega loud exhausts on is that people like to be having good noise in the car without having mega loud exhausts on the outside. And from what I can tell from YouTube the S5 is already fairly loud outside. It's the combination of making a refined performance car that means you need the car to be well insulated from external noises yet the exhaust and engine are external noises so without putting a Milltek on (which would be too loud for a lot of people) you wouldn't get a lot of noise in the cabin otherwise. And the benefit of it being amplified or fake is that it can be switched on or off.

If it was a cheap hatchback with no requirement for refinement it probably wouldn't need to be artificially enhanced.

Similar to what most cars of this class have as far as I am aware so I aren't surprised. I was more surprised when I read somewhere there wasn't any fake sound. I suppose it's not fake if it's amplifying the actual sound in real time.
Yes, I do get your point for those who want their car to sound like something it's not, but for me I'd rather nothing at all than (IMO) a silly and pointless fake/amplified sound inside, and TBH as I don't care about the sound inside and now knowing I can now unplug it is actually a bonus. If it was real then fine, and what you may expect from buying a performance car. It's just this un-advertised 'cheating sound' that bugs me. Seems like the days are going where you actually hear the engine in a refined car as it was meant to sound such as Aston Martin etc.

Have you tried disconnecting it yet to see if it does make any noticeable difference?
Suppose you have any pictures of it?
Having done a quick Google search, I can't see anyone else referring to this and just wondered what it actually really does?
Have posted on the lease thread.

Opinions please.

My SB came from my local Audi dealer with the 'quattro' emblem on the rear doors. They seem to have a habit of doing this on all new applicable cars (as mentioned with some example photo's back in this thread). I'm not sure if I want to leave it or take it off...i'm edging towards taking them off, what do you all think??

I hope mine doesn't have it when it shows up. I'll leave it at that!

Has anyone who got theirs from JCT got this on their car?
Hmmm, maybe your thinking what I am thinking....a bit tacky?....maybe should have told them not to put these on then, but it slipped my mind.

Well one would not expect it to be put on as default! Yes I think it is a bit tacky TBH it doesn't look like it is meant to be there.
Yep, I know what you mean. I keep looking at it now the car is parked parallel to the house. I Have not had a chance to do anything yet as just been to busy, but when I finally get around to washing it, I will borrow the wife's hairdryer as they should come off fairly easy I think. Didn't look so bad on an blue S3 convertible in the showroom though. http://thumbsnap.com/dD6V8MQH

Personally I quite like it, have been thinking about whether I would put on my car but wasn't sure what it would look like, so thanks for posting the picture.
If I was going to do it, I would have put it on the skirting trim below the door rather than on the door itself, but that's a personal thing.
My question would be how easy it is to remove, I had one of these on a previous car and the guy I sold it to asked me to take it off and I remember it being a complete nightmare, I tried and sorts of things from various blue removing chemicals to scraping it off with a credit card in the end.......

By the way, the side profile of the car in black with privacy glass looks awesome - can't wait for to arrive
Yes, maybe if they had positioned it better I may think otherwise. A hair drier should work I hope.

I think it's nice they put it on but they should have asked you. It's a bit like the quattro things on the grilles on RS models, it looks OK but probably better without
They now put them on all new Quattro's at my dealer unless you ask them not to...I forgot to ask them not to in my eagerness to collect the car. rolleyes

Anyone out there who now has their new S5.......

Having now driven it for a few hundred miles, anyone else noticed there is a niggly turbo lag when pulling away from traffic lights? it's only half a second or so with a 'dead' spot at first when you press the accelerator. At speed there appears to be none noticeable, just from a standing start.

Yes I have noticed this and its very annoying. I thought it may have been the tiptronicngearbox being sluggish possibly a combination of the two?
Yes, maybe. I'm more inclined to think it is turbo lag as it spools up from idle. This could be a snag with the new twin scroll turbo, and why they specifically located it in the V to reduce this potential lag to a minimum. To be sure, we need to know if anyone with a naturally aspirated engine and tiptronic box has a similar issue or not?

I still cant figure out how to set up to change driving modes from the steering wheel - anyone else managed this?

Also, has anyone managed to get the song details on the radio view? I dont think you can but ill ask anyway. Something you can do on a bog standard Polo but not on the latest MMI on an S5!
Go to drive select, select dynamic, push the mmi wheel left, this will give you the steering wheel button options.
In DAB push the mmi wheel right for songs that are playing.

For you guys still waiting for delivery, afterwards it doesn't get much better. Had the Audi Connect fob for the code missing from the key ring on delivery. New one ordered from Audi in Germany via my dealer nearly two weeks ago...chased it up today and told it would possibly be another 10 days but they are not that sure. Audi cars are nice, but their customer service is total cr**p. Lesson here is MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CODE TAG on delvery!!!!

Sounds more like it's the subwoofer for the stereo. Have this on my Golf R with Dynaudio. More sensible than trying to stuff it under a seat IMO.

Generally the augmented engine noise in VAG cars comes from a 'soundaktor' that vibrates the front windscreen to create extra sound in the cabin and the effect varies depending on the driving mode selected (it is loudest in race/sport). In my opinion, nowhere near as naff as it's made out to be by self proclaimed petrolheads, especially if you're not in 'sport' mode or whatever when to be honest it can get pretty wearing over the longer term - but I don't see who would want to drive around all the time in 'sport' anyway as it makes the steering heavier, will firm up the dampers (if you have adaptive dampers) and will make lots more noise in the cabin. In regular mode it's a pretty subtle effect. You can usually set up a custom drive mode that puts the soundaktor in 'minimum' setting where it's practically undetectable unless you really floor the accelerator.

But hey, you can usually just pull the wires to it if it really offends your sense of 'driving purity'.
Yes, this little device has been mentioned before. Not sure at this point if the sub woofer doubles up as a exhaust amplifier, so going to test that. But if I ever had a 'soundaktor' I would deffo pull the plug on that. If I wanted to hear a louder exhaust sound, I would rather just wind the window down and listen to the real one.....but that's just me.

The soundaktor emulates engine noise more than exhaust (hence why its under the windscreen)
Ah, ok. Still wouldn't want one though.

I'll second that. Particularly pleased with your comments about poverty spec black and the gangsta glass as I've gone for the black but saved on the glass. Good to know the stereo isn't pants too.
Adding to the above: Anyone else on here experienced the awful 1/2 second turbo lag from a standing start at idle?

Yes, but I put it down to the gearbox being dim, not the turbo. The turbo doesnt spool until 2k revs or so, so wouldnt be a factor on initial pull away.
This is what I cannot figure, and thought it must be the turbo as when you accelerate the revs are over 2k, and this does not happen in launch control.

Other Drivers.......

Now you have your S5, what is your experience of other drivers on the road? I don't drive like an idiot, and I am considerate to other drivers but other drivers seem to have a problem with the car.

Was driving up the M1 on Wednesday when this total censored in a Renault clio started driving right up my backside at 80mph, so I thought move over let him pass and bother someone else but no, he pulled over as well and continued to do so. Flashed my brake lights a bit as a warning so he then kept leapfrogging backwards and forwards. Moved over again for the exit lane as I was turning off, he then passed me with a wan*er sign!!

This morning I exited a roundabout on a right hand turn, and a Skoda from the opposite junction then turned left behind me and was about 6" from my bumper beeping the horn for about 100 yards for no reason at all, and until I moved over into a right turning filter lane, they then passed with a finger out the window!

Never had this before, does this car have such a negative effect on people??..has this sort of thing happened to you??

Hi Guys

I've had my S5 Coupe for over 2 weeks now and covered around 500 miles. I adore the car but my only hold up with it is the MPG I am currently averaging at (12MPG)

I would say 95% of the time I am driving in Efficiency mode and I'm not thrashing the pants off it either.

Can anyone post MPG they are currently getting out of their S5 coupes?

On an another note I am thinking of getting the calipers painted by http://www.specialisttyres.com/brakecalipers.htm and wanted to know if the red calipers as an option from factory includes front and rear and emblem on all calipers.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers
Alex

I did not want to pay the extortionate price Audi wanted for the red caliper option, so did them myself for £5.00 using red caliper paint from Halfords. If you spec red calipers, there is a small white S5 logo, but it is hard to see. I masked off the raised part on the front caliper so the logo is still visible. Here is a pic...ignore the Quattro that the dealer put on the rear doors, that is coming off at the weekend.

Oh, BTW I average about 20mpg around town, 32ish on a motorway run. 12mpg is pretty severe.

Nice work with the caliper paint. Did you have to prime it first or was it just a straight spray on?

I have had my Coupe for 2600 miles now and I started around 16mpg and it's slowly crept up to 22.5mpg. Ito done a mixture of town driving. Thrashing A roads and a few long motorway trips. I can't imagine I'm going to get much better than what it is now. 12mpg seems very low if you are not in dynamic mode... I'd assume a large portion of that is the stop start city/town driving?? Even when I'm Thrashing it through the a roads I don't get those mpgs!
It was not sprayed but carefully brushed on (3 coats), although you would never know that as it is completely smooth & glossy.
