Yep, thanks guys. I think they put it in the wrong place too. Off it comes at the weekend then.

I think it's nice they put it on but they should have asked you. It's a bit like the quattro things on the grilles on RS models, it looks OK but probably better without

I think you have to pay for that quattro writing on the RS models. I know i wouldn't have it.

It's if you pay for one of the packs like the matt ali pack which looks good apart from the stuff like the aforementioned that make the car look too "Max Power" for my liking. It's an issue for me with all the RS models (if I could afford any) that they look too OTT without actually looking more sporty. They could flare the arches more etc but they tend to want to put more vents and tacky stuff on there. Like who thinks them vents next to the lamps on the RS5 look good? Makes me glad to have the S5 TBH

Anyone out there who now has their new S5.......

Having now driven it for a few hundred miles, anyone else noticed there is a niggly turbo lag when pulling away from traffic lights? it's only half a second or so with a 'dead' spot at first when you press the accelerator. At speed there appears to be none noticeable, just from a standing start.

Yes I have noticed this and its very annoying. I thought it may have been the tiptronicngearbox being sluggish possibly a combination of the two?

Yes, maybe. I'm more inclined to think it is turbo lag as it spools up from idle. This could be a snag with the new twin scroll turbo, and why they specifically located it in the V to reduce this potential lag to a minimum. To be sure, we need to know if anyone with a naturally aspirated engine and tiptronic box has a similar issue or not?

I still cant figure out how to set up to change driving modes from the steering wheel - anyone else managed this?

Also, has anyone managed to get the song details on the radio view? I dont think you can but ill ask anyway. Something you can do on a bog standard Polo but not on the latest MMI on an S5!

Go to drive select, select dynamic, push the mmi wheel left, this will give you the steering wheel button options.
In DAB push the mmi wheel right for songs that are playing.

For you guys still waiting for delivery, afterwards it doesn't get much better. Had the Audi Connect fob for the code missing from the key ring on delivery. New one ordered from Audi in Germany via my dealer nearly two weeks ago...chased it up today and told it would possibly be another 10 days but they are not that sure. Audi cars are nice, but their customer service is total cr**p. Lesson here is MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE CODE TAG on delvery!!!!

Here's something interesting & very disappointing: Took the spare wheel out yesterday, and underneath in an upright black plastic cowl I noticed a 6" bloody loud speaker!!.....I did think that it was louder inside in dynamic mode than outside, but thought it may have been some exhaust resonance from underneath, obviously not. I HATE the idea of any fake sounds, so I will just disconnect the stupid thing if it is what I think it is.
Sounds more like it's the subwoofer for the stereo. Have this on my Golf R with Dynaudio. More sensible than trying to stuff it under a seat IMO.

Generally the augmented engine noise in VAG cars comes from a 'soundaktor' that vibrates the front windscreen to create extra sound in the cabin and the effect varies depending on the driving mode selected (it is loudest in race/sport). In my opinion, nowhere near as naff as it's made out to be by self proclaimed petrolheads, especially if you're not in 'sport' mode or whatever when to be honest it can get pretty wearing over the longer term - but I don't see who would want to drive around all the time in 'sport' anyway as it makes the steering heavier, will firm up the dampers (if you have adaptive dampers) and will make lots more noise in the cabin. In regular mode it's a pretty subtle effect. You can usually set up a custom drive mode that puts the soundaktor in 'minimum' setting where it's practically undetectable unless you really floor the accelerator.

But hey, you can usually just pull the wires to it if it really offends your sense of 'driving purity'.

Yes, this little device has been mentioned before. Not sure at this point if the sub woofer doubles up as a exhaust amplifier, so going to test that. But if I ever had a 'soundaktor' I would deffo pull the plug on that. If I wanted to hear a louder exhaust sound, I would rather just wind the window down and listen to the real one.....but that's just me.

The soundaktor emulates engine noise more than exhaust (hence why its under the windscreen)

Yeah, in some of the 'sporty' diesels, Audi actually put resonators into the exhaust system itself to create a less agricultural sound.

As for cabin noise, I think that the soundaktor is actually quite a well considered solution to offering a little bit more drama should you want it.

It annoys me on my Golf that I cannot keep the engine in race mode and disable the soundaktor (without unplugging it). I like the throttle response from it but not the noise all the time.

More recent Rs will let you include soundaktor settings in the custom mode config (certainly MY2016 on) ... you just set 'Eco' mode for the soundaktor and it's almost silent. No idea why they don't update the software on older models.

Yeah mine is a 15 so I haven't got that. Interesting to know they added the setting though.

So, my initial thoughts after 30 miles.

My spec is a Sportback in Flat Black/Black with Virtual Cockpit, Flat Bottom Wheel and Privacy Glass.

Exterior:

  • Glad I didnt pay for Metallic, poverty spec Black looks fine to me
  • Black with silver mirrors, window trim, dash trim and wheels is perfect contrast. I think blacking it out would look atrocious.
  • Wheels sit well in arches, looks a good ride height
  • I wouldn't spec Privacy Glass again, not on any colour, even having thought black cars look odd without it. Looks fine either way, but I dont think its good value at £375.
Interior:

  • Virtual Cockpit is nice (changed my mind) Turned on Google Earth and used small screen. MMI is very good, even things like reconnecting BT Audio when getting back in car is better than BMW. Also I found the ability to select Primary and Secondary phones very useful. My work phone connects for calls and personal phone connects for Music. BMW did this but didnt remember preference/order which this does. Very neat.
  • Stereo sound quality is more than acceptable, not as good as Harmon Kardon I'm coming from in the BMW, but thats to be expected. Audi's optional sound on the S5 certianly not worth the additional cost, the standard system is very good.
  • Whole interior is a cut above BMW and Merc
  • Not sure massage isnt a gimmick yet, its basically moving the lumbar support up and down automatically.
  • Seats are perfect, very comfortable, low enough and adjustable enough to suit all. I like the way it inflates side bolsters to your preset size when you start up.
Drivetrain:

  • Dynamic mode makes the sound loud enough, nice rumble with synthetic pops on overrun and downshifts. Anything louder would be chav and out of keeping. (IMHO, I am 40 years old)
  • The ride is a little harsher than I expected over lumps and bumps, perfectly livable with. I am coming from BMW adaptive so expect a little spoilt.
  • Dynamic Steering setting has a weirdly large dead zone and is disconcertingly vague on intial turn in, I much prefer Comfort. Preferred setting is Dynamic, Comfort, Dynamic in Individual for me
  • Very easy to drive very fast, coming from a BMW which took a while to master, I was at 8/10's in this on first drive.
  • Thank f87k Audi have sorted out the understeer, feels a world better than my RS3 already. Not pressed on too much yet obviously.
  • Gearbox is dim witted at low speeds, changes from 1st to second in particular are lumpy. Same gearbox hardware as the BMW implementation in M135i etc so can only be software here. The rest of the time is mostly well behaved and I dont miss a DCT at all.
  • Eco mode is pointless
  • It's quick enough
  • I'd like to try it with a chip and 400bhp
