Id agree about the price, the options dont really bother me that much.
Its very difficult to find a good one that has not been modified in some way.
But why not get the best specification for your money? Its very difficult to find a good one that has not been modified in some way.
I wouldn't rule out some lightly modified cars.
Many of the proper enthusiast owners mod them and these are the better examples out there generally.

I actually prefer the tartan cloth.
I know its frowned upon in the pistonheads community but would you consider fitting a hid conversion kit if it has projector style headlights?
I prefer the looks of the tartan, the leather looks a bit characterless. Going to look at one with cloth this weekend so that will make my mind up. Heated cloth would be the ultimate goal The problem with the leather is that it stretches badly and is sticky and uncomfortable in the summer as well which sucks. It's annoying though as any car with Xenons always has leather specd. I wouldn't retro fit HIDS they always end up looking worse because people never do them properly. They need projector lenses to be worthwhile. Also you don't have self leveling and washers alot of the time. As Jay said just get a car with factory fitted.

Interesting thread. The MK5 GTi is on my cars to own list and I'm pondering over getting one later this year. I want a 5dr DSG with a few toys so factory HID lights are a must.
What are they like to drive? My only experience was a MK6 1.4 TSi Match DSG that I had on lease a few years back. It was a tad bland but did the job. The box needed replacing in the first year though which was done under warranty?
What's the performance like out of the box and is there any point going down the whole hog uprated turbo route? I currently drive a modded Evo X which is highly capable with nearly 500bhp but seems a bit overkill when used as a daily for commuting etc.

When I had mine a few years ago it replaced a Leon 1.4 TSI, so the same engine as that Golf Mk6 you mention. Felt like a significant step up with a huge increase in performance and far more entertaining to drive! Doesn't need upgrading IMO, 200bhp is enough for UK roads. The DSG is excellent and suits the engine really nicely and 5-doors are always more useable and desirable. What are they like to drive? They don't feel that quick, I always thought it needed another 50bhp, and coming from what you have a standard one will be a bit frustrating, miss it thoughWhat are they like to drive? Bear in mind the youngest MK5 is almost 10 years old now, and they feel it.
I've had my Ed30 since 70K miles and it's been a fantastic and reliable car, but now that it's almost on 110K, I can just feel (and hear) there are large and expensive jobs looming. I've already done the common drivetrain things but the chassis just feels tired, vague and uncontrolled on rough roads. And the (manual) gearbox is very rattly when hot (it's not the DMF) and has a recalcitrant shift quality. It just feels spent!
If I could turn back the clock, I think I would have gone for a MK7 PP, or a Focus ST 3. Both are extremely capable and drive a lot better than the MK5 imo.
Having said that, if the man maths stack up and it's more viable to refresh a MK5 to get it back up to full fighting fit standard, then they are superb cars to drive, and I would get the ED30 personally. Mainly for it's styling and tuning potential.

I'm also considering one of these, I have a 2012 Mondeo 240BHP at the moment but no need for a massive car anymore so thinking of trading down and putting some money in the bank. Also want something a bit more fun. This one is 2 minutes down the road from me, the dodgy aftermarket badge is a put off but the recent cambelt/waterpump seem good plus the MOT history checks out.

Yeah looks OK to me. Not sure what that 'turbo' badge is all about, but don't let ith put you off an otherwise potentially good car.http://www.seecarsderby.co.uk/used-cars/volkswagen...
One I forgot to mention, don't be too alarmed by any of the body panels not quite aligning 100%. It doesn't automatically assume an accident. A lot of them are just like that from the factory.
Having said that, none of the German cars I've owned had perfect panel gaps!
Not a million miles away from Mk6 money with that - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...
I'd stretch the extra if you could given the Mk6 feels and looks quite a bit more modern. The Mk5 only makes sense as a sub £5k buy IMO.

NOW HAS THE BETTER MODIFIED/STRONGER TIMING CHAIN KIT AT A COST OF OVER £4000.I'd stretch the extra if you could given the Mk6 feels and looks quite a bit more modern. The Mk5 only makes sense as a sub £5k buy IMO.
I hope that's a new engine!
Watch out for pre-May 2010 engines at the cheap end of the market, at least budget for the new tensioner.
Here's what £2.9K gets you...

There are some bargains out there, I certainly wouldn't want to pay £5K for one.

My son was looking at the MK6 until we kept seeing 'new engine fitted by VW..............' and started to investigate.
That put him off so started looking at the MK5. All was going well until he saw one with the wing back seats (rare option). The car was OK but very expensive but now he wants one with those seats but at a reasonable price.
There are some nice ones about and I read that they are reckoned to be the 'best' Golf GTI ever made. (Whatever best is).
