The V5 is a lovely engine. I had the 150 V5 one. I would say a decent not too loud exhaust and decent air filter. Just service it properly. it is really an amazing sounding engine, but not too fast but nice to drive.

Is the only sensible way.

Otherwise spend many thousands adding forced induction. Anything else is a bit of a waste of time.

Not an awful lot you can do to a naturally aspirated petrol without spending lots. Remap might gain 10hp, a panel filter and better exhaust manifold maybe another 10-15hp. Cams and rod-bolts could give you more at the top end but that will be easily £1000+ if you get someone to do it for you, and could be 2 or 3 times thats depending on the cam and how much mapping is needed afterwards.

I don't know if you can turbo or super-charge these engines easily? Perhaps replace it with the equivalent 1.8T that's much more easily tuneable.

10V 150bhp was my first car. Sounded awesome! Lowered it on Eibach springs and fitted Audi TT 17" allows, was well tidy init.
Unfortunately not much you can do powerwise...

Thanks for the replies guys, I did have a feeling that there wouldn't be much I could do without spending a few grand on superchargers or even more on ripping out the engine and replacing it.
I've already dropped it down on some fully adjustable all done for a couple of hundred quid. I suppose I could fit a K&N to make it more "GrOwLy..." But apart from that, I'll just enjoy the heated leather and cruising speeds 😊

Lots, and all things that could be removed if you did later choose to purchase a more powerful car.

Quality panel filter in the factory box, lovely induction note on those engines.

Quality springs and dampers (not too low, you don't want to wreck the geometry) and make sure your suspension is absolutely fighting fit. Replace anything that's worn or looks old. Dogbone engine mount will be soft and wobbly.

The best tyres you can afford on sensible sized wheels.

A proper, 4 wheel alignment from a specialist (not a high-street tyre chain).

In all seriousness, a track day or two. Even a half day or evening event. Take up the offer of tuition there too. You will learn far, far more and enjoy it more than you would simply trying to scrape an extra 10 BHP. MK4 Golfs are massively tunable cars and there is a huge range of relatively inexpensive upgrade parts available.

Keep the standard parts of anything you replace and if you want more power afterwards all of the bits are transferable to a 1.8 turbo (or will sell easily on ebay if you get something else).

I think I was being a little premature with wanting to uprate the car, whilst the wife was out today, the engine suddenly died and now won't fire..time for some more workshop time ??

Found the source of the problem after much searching. Firstly, pulled the air intake pipe and give it a blast of "super juice"(as my dad calls it 😂) and the engine fired, very briefly, checked the fuel pump fuse, all good.
Next checked the solenoid and you could feel it clicking as you turned the key.
Last but not least, pulled the wires from the pump under the back seat...pump is DeAd 😲...
£214 for a new one..this is a Mother's Day present the wife will never forget 😂😂😂

That's annoying frown

One of the nice things about MK4s is the excellent availability of cheap, used parts. Sometimes you need something in a hurry and have to buy new but there's very little you can't pick up for a tenth of the price on ebay or one of the forums.

We had one of the older 150bhp versions.

Was a really nice car, but not fast, and very thirsty.

I don't think they were that popular as they were slower than the 1.8T and as thirsty as the V6, but I liked ours. With leather, cruise and the armrest it was a nice motorway cruiser.

Our 170 is a good distance cruiser, but as you say, very thirsty about 21-24mpg around town but it does have a bit more poke than the 150.
I do agree though, it is a nice place to be sitting when you mash your foot down on the loud peddle tongue out
