Typical isn't it? 3 years and 1 month old and just into my ownership and driving along and the infotainment system clicks and dies.

OK, I think, maybe a fuse blew - I checked them today, they seem OK, reset as suggested in some forums doesn't work, so I've got an auto electrician coming to look at it tomorrow.

The car is a 2017 Golf R 7.5 - Dash is working fine, but no Sat Nav, Audi, Phone or ability to switch modes (done via the infotainment screen) - Basically everything related to the big screen in the middle of the dash.

Has anyone else experienced sudden 'death' of their VW infotainment system and managed to resolve it?

Thanks

M

Found out that it's the infotainment control unit (the one in the glove box) - £1900 replacement...

VW quality at its best.

Dealer offered to knock some off themselves but VW are essentially saying "F**k Off, it's your problem" - OK, it's out of warranty, but one month on a part that gets no wear and tear and NOTHING?

Not impressed by them, to be honest - Other manufacturers have been far more customer friendly in the past.

Have you had that from VW yourself, or just the dealer passing it on? From personal and reading VW forums experience, a lot seems to depend on the dealer - some will try and screw money out of you even if it could be a warranty / goodwill claim where others seem to get things covered.

I suppose though, to be harsh, there has to be a cut-off somewhere. I've extended the warranty twice on wife's Tiguan for a few hundred quid a year so about £700 over two years - it's DSG, 4Motiion, AdBlue etc etc and as you've found, the slightest thing could result in a hefty bill. I've had nothing back from it apart from peace-of-mind and I really don't know whether to buy another year.

Sorry to hear this, can't help unfortunately but you've got me thinking about my own warranty now.

My GTI is 3 years old in October and I was thinking I'd just do a drive line type warranty... might check how much extra the full warranty is now!

It won't be too bad.

I've been buying Golfs from new and then running them for years with VW extended warranty. (and yes, I've made successful claims).

I agree with OP that just one month out of warranty he's being treated shoddily, but then he could have bought the warranty? (That's what VW's argument will probably be)

In fact, thinking about it, I bought a two year top up to five years' warranty when I bought my R. I think it was the princely sum of £250 per year.

I've just bought year 5-6 for £335.

OP:

Are you aware of this?:

Due to the circumstances created by the COVID-19 crisis, all Volkswagen manufacturer warranties* that were due to expire between 1 March and 31 May 2020, have been extended by three months.

Give you some leverage?

youll be able to get it repaired, or a unit from a breaker will fit, it'll need component protection recoded, which is mord of a job for a mileage correction guy or remapper than it is for an autospark. dealers and aitosparks often tell you they cant be recoded, but what they actuallymean is THEY cant do it, There will be a wee polish gadgey nearby who will rock up in an old 7 seriesand do it in 10 mins for £75 or so.

Of course, it didn't - VW were the most unhelpful manufacturer I've ever had any dealings with. Did I feel like a valued customer? No, I was made to feel like an irritant who was spoiling their day by mentioning that one of their quality products had failed days out of warranty.

A pretty sh*t attitude from everyone I spoke to at VW.

The local dealer, Martins, were more helpful and recoded a used unit I acquired for a total cost about a 5th what VW wanted to charge me for what transpired would have been a 'factory reconditioned' unit.

Must be something about manufacturers with V at the beginning of their names, last VAG group car I buy and I made a similar vow after owning a Vauxhall many years ago...

If you mean VW UK customer services then you're not dealing with VW - you're calling a Capita call centre. Why would staff there give a toss?

Or because they're paid to?

Obviously an unfashionable idea these days.

In reality, whether the staff 'give a toss' or not, the decisions are set by the VW management, hence my decision to swerve their products in future.

Shame as I had a Chiron on order biggrin

Hi marcosgt,

My 2017 GTi has just experienced the same failure as you experienced, complete failure of the unit, message reads compass not available at this time or similar, costs mentioned were "thousands"!

I be interested to know how you acquired a replacement board and how it was recoded. This is a legit request, seeking some assistance here.

Thank you in advance if you can help.

M
