Why ? Traction is only one aspect of the issue. I guess the M5 will have more cornering/lateral grip even in the wet, which may compensate. There won't be a massive difference in the right hands.
I'm not sure I agree with that, have you driven one of the 4WD Audis? They are actually at their best in rubbish conditions, they are more fun to drive and you can probably go just as fast as in the dry most of the time.
I also remember topgear did the fastest lap around their track in the S4 when it was starting to rain.
I agree the M5 would probably be fast and fun in the wet but I know which one 99% of the population would be safer in and I know which I'd rather be trying to go fast in given bad conditions.
Audi have done it again (imoho). Love it.
I can appreciate the M5 is going to be faster/more fun overall but I still wouldn't want one over a 'S' or 'RS' Audi. Just my opinion.
I think Audi have it right S6 and RS6 two different cars set up to do each of their respective jobs exce,,emtly. M5? Too many options - unless you drive around in 'M' mode all the time. Too much Faff.

I have ran an S3 for a few years and driven countless 4wd on track inc. scoobys, EVOs and even a B5 S4 and yes the traction made them very easy to drive fast in adverse condition thanks to immense traction up to the point where they start understeering / 4wheel drifting. I loved the S3 but big weight and high C of V means less cornering grip, wet or dry, compared to a balanced chassis (lateral grip I mean, NOT longitudinal, where they excel).
In many hands, the S6 may well "murder" the M5 but it won't take that much skill to redress the balance and no way a decent pedeller will be "murdered", whatever that means.

1,910kg weight
Porktastic!
I guess the nearest competitor is the V10 M5, but it really is a class above the S6. But the next BMW along the line is the 550i which is outclassed by the S6 by as much as the S6 is outclassed by the M5.
Weight - point to M5
M5 1819kg
S6 1910kg
Power - point to M5
M5 500bhp
S6 435bhp
Price - point to Audi
M5 £65K
S6 £55K
0-60mph - point to M5
M5 0-60mpg 4.7sec
S6 0-60mph 5.2sec
M5 clear winner, at least until the real deal RS6 turns up to kick some butt.
Oh yeah?
Just wait until it rains.
Bye, bye BMW!
Having owned Audis most of my driving life, last 2 were RS4 and RS6, I just do not understand the logic behind this car. Previous RS6 with V8 was perfect combo. Also if I was paying this sort of money, I would not want something so understated. I see very little differentiation now in Audi RS products (new RS4 looks very similar to std with Sportline pack - even Sprortline flas on front and rear looks similar to RS flash.
At least previous RS products were clearly identifiable.
Finally, V10 motor - whilst I appreciate fuel consumption will not be 1st priority, the previous RS6 V8 was ample power at 450bhp and returned 25mpg average. What more do you need in this camera infested world for everyday use.

But this is the S6 not the RS6. The RS6 will be along later with I'm sure more body addenda and even more power. Not sure about the fuel cons though!
The M5 might be faster, but try driving one round town in 5mph traffic you will soon change your mind, the Audi will wip it in everyday life, as will the new RS6 and the Alpina B5... thats why the USA market now has a Manual M5, pity we cant....then life will be different

Apologies for the thread resurrection but there's a couple of 2-year old examples of these on the 'Trader for £22k. This represents a staggeringly good amount of metal for the money imo.
This one's a liitle more but is very low mileage and fully specced (sky TV etc) - I'm seriously tempted:

I'm off to bed before I have any more bright ideas.
