Audi's MultiTronic Gearbox

Don't have time to read 27 pages. Quick question - if I buy a 2.0 TDI A6 S-Line with a multitronic box, will I die in a ball of flames / risk emptying my wallet?
The second one, IMO. I would never touch a multi again, but I'm at the low end (£3-5k) of the market. Far too much chance of a relatively simple problem writing the car off. It'd have to be a REALLY good deal, and no other cars within a couple of hundred miles or so.Do read the thread as your questions are answered in full several times already.
The tip boxes in quattro cars are strong, many see over 200k with no attention. An oil change at 100 is considered good practice.
The later multitronic boxes are generally well behaved. 01-04ish terrible. 05-8 much better. 09 on problems rare unless neglected.

Audi 1.9.tdi se auto. 53 plate. Had problems start at 75000 miles. always had car serviced by audi intil 45000. By 75000 was experiencing a shudder on starting off. Local gear box garage diagnosed it needed 7 plate clutch upgrade. Also noticed oil leak on another part of transmission. Decided to get it all done as box had to be sent away to have seals replaced. Total cost £1900. Within 2 weeks the shudder had started again. Garage changed the clutch again free of charge but was not convinced it was the clutch, more likeley to be a pressur loss in box that was causing a stall when starting off. I decided before spending any more on a car that was only worth £3000 max i would trade it in before more problem arrose. after agreeing a price for trade in and 4 days before the deed. The heat exchanger in the rad split sending gear oil into the water system and water into the clutch and gear box. car now unroadworthy and will cost thousands to replace.

Hoping someone can help,
I have a 57 plate Audi Avant 2.0tdi Multitronic (I think, it has 7 gears/plates when I put it into manual mode). While I was driving yesterday going round a corner on a slight incline a heard a funny sound and then felt a juddering motion. I immediately thought it was a clutch problem. I got the car home fine, checked the car over, no warning lights, so assumed it was ok. An hour later I took it out again and it was fine, all downhill driving though. On the way back uphill driving and the car stalled. Pulled the car over, restarted the engine, didn’t bother trying to drive in auto mode, so switched to manual and got home fine.
Drove it this morning and it seemed ok, but after about 10 mins it started to judder whenever the revs were low 1200, and when going up hills. Manual mode up hills is fine.
The car has always been serviced and has had the necessary gear box oil change, and belt changes, etc. It has done approx 52k.
I've read a few posts on here and this problem seems to be most common on pre 07 models or those who havent had the oil change, mine is post 07 and did have the gear box oil change.
Before I take it to either an independent garage or an Audi, can anyone arm me with any info as to what the problem may be , and approximately how much it would cost, so as I don’t get fleeced.
Many thanks, Jon

Hello,
Let me firstly say that I have read all the 28 pages of this topic
Now, I would love to have advice from Tame Tehnician (or any other experts for Audi).
Here is the deal. I am about to buy an 2008 Audi A6 2,7 from a very good friend, who had the car from the begining and had taken care of like one should with such car (services at official Audi dealerships and so on..). The car had, to this date , no problems whatsoever and is in perfect condition (I have driven it myself for a couple tousand of miles). The car has a 7 plate multitronic (no problems whatsoever).
My only concern is the milage. My friend has such a job that requires of him to do a lot of travel with the car, so he has been on the road quite a lot. Mind you, that thr car has driven mainly on the "good roads" like austrian and german highways. It has 167k miles on the clock.
What is the experience from the garage? Is this too much of a milage? Will the service and runing costs be too much? Am I looking at possible big failures (like the multitronic)?
The car was regularely serviced and really had no big problems by now.
Thank you very much for the advices

The fact that you are still asking this question despite reading 28 pages of mostly people with borked multitronic boxes, tends to make me think you actually haven't read it Let me firstly say that I have read all the 28 pages of this topic

Cars go wrong eventually, buying one with 167k and a multi box is really asking for trouble no matter how much its been pampered. No one on here will be able to accurately say whether or not it will go wrong next week or next year. It may, it may not.
Having just bought a 08 A6 multitronic 7 speed with 69k on the clock, unfortunately before I had read the horror stories about the about the gear box. The question is, is the 08 model with 7 speed any better than the earlier models? Gearbox seemed good on the test run and it wasn't just a quick run round the block, got it on the local bypass and every thing worked and felt good. Yet to pick it up from the garage.
Thanks in advance !
Cheers Ian.

Just found this thread and thought that people might be interested to learn that right now my 2012 (current shape) A6 3.0tdi multitronic is residing in the dealership awaiting a new gearbox. Quite unexpected!
My 2012 A6 had the box fail too. It was handled terribly by Audi and has seen me vow never to return to the brand again. baldrickmk2 said:

I wouldn't worry unnecessarily, a lot of the horror stories relate to the 6 speed multitronic. I ran an 07 A4 with 7 speed multitronic for a couple of years and it gave me no trouble, it had done over 80k miles when I sold it. Just ensure that the service history shows that the transmission oil has been changed on schedule. Thanks in advance !

Hi everyone,
I am new to this forum so let me just say thank you for all the info on this site. I recently bought an 09 plate Audi A4, multitronic gearbox obviously. It's high miles, I known the car since brand new, that was one of the reasons I went for it. Has got full service history, cambelt replaced the day I bought it, lovely. I've done about 1000 miles already it drives really nice.
But, there is a noise coming from underneath front of the car , central console area, it has been there for a while. It's like a claking noise and you can only hear it when in Neutral or Parking, and it comes and goes. It almost sounds like a loose plate or loose screw... Got my car booked in at my local Audi for a gearbox oil change and I will ask them to asesss the issue but I thought I will ask you guys for a few advices of what this could be ?
Many thanks
