I think the best thing anyone can do is take a long test drive of both cars and see which they prefer.I dont go in for all this "one is great and the other is crap"-its not as black and white as that. Both are excellent cars its just down to which you prefer.

I would like a GTi but I really WANT an R32. The Mk V R32 just looks and feels special whereas the GTi looks like a Golf with bigger wheels. I know there is more to it but at the emotive level the R32 stands out for me.
If you havent had a GTI and can afford the running costs without worry, then Definatley get the R32!!

My slight negativity is because the running costs over the GTI, nothing to do with the R32, its a great car to have!!
I could afford the R32 but chose the GTi Ed 30 ..... not so much for the running costs - though that comes into it as I resent spending too much on fuel, tax, etc for a car with 250 bhp (might as well get one with 300bhp and have the same running costs!)

I was also thinking a bit further down the line as R32 prices are falling rapidly due to the tax/fuel issues. Lovely car though with a super 4wd system. My other fear is they are almost too easy to drive - if that makes sense biggrin
Thats also a very good point, the R32 has lost a shed load! unless you plan to keep it, then the hit could be quote alot!.

The ED30 is a excellent motor also, TBH as the previous comment mentions, its all down to personal taste, if we all had the same, then there would only be one car (R32 ofcourse..smile ).. Golfs do rock!..smile

Both the GTi and R32 are easy to drive quickly - but I wouldn't worry about that as both are still great fun. These cars are every day cars, if you want a challenge buy a TVR smile

Anyway, GTi is an excellent car - no doubt. For me it came down to noise and the R32 is probably one the best sounding (new) cars for under £30K. The GTi 4 pot, although very good is simply a 4 pot.

If you don't want to be noticed go for the GTi as the R32 is quite vocal and turns heads with the V6 and exhaust note.

As already said, if you can afford to run an R32 then it’s a no brainer – the R32.

I've done the TVR thing with a Griffith 500 - maybe that's why I am going through a sane ('ish) phase biggrin

You can't go wrong with either - though you won't notice changes of weather with the R32 as opposed to the GTi (which spins everywhere in the wet biggrin) and will have a superb exhaust note that nothing short of a TVR can match smile

hehe

I stumbled across this thread by accident...

The R32 sounds great dont get me wrong but there are a million cars in between an R32 and a TVR that sound unbelievable... To say that the R32 is one step down from a TVR is hilarious...

Unless I read something wrong? scratchchin
