Afternoon smile

After selling the impreza on Saturday, I immediately found a thirst for something a bit more retro and a bit of a rolling project.

Luckily I managed to source 24 hours later a 1990 Golf Gti 16v, grey in colour (not sure of exact colour name,) 156k on the clock, and pretty standard bar a set of crashy lowering springs, a naff gearknob and a cheapo stereo.

It is not perfect by a long way, list of things to do are:

Fix electric windows
rebuild front bumper and splitter
raise the suspension slightly with a decent ride setup
full service
sort tracking and look for worn arms and bushes
sort mechanics of the front seats which are a bit rocky and not 100%
Find and fit an OE stereo
Refurbish alloys and fit decent tyres

Although the above needs attention, the car runs, brakes and handles very well indeed. First impressions are very good, it feels a bit tired and the steering wheel is on the large side, however very impressed with my very first VW.

Can anyone recommend any decent owners clubs?

Some very quick pics, will get a decent location next week some time.

Welcome to Dub ownership.

Can't see the pics as I'm in work but you've got the right number of valves I see wink

Seat is an easy fix, it's most likely the inner and outer guides missing, search on ebay for them but the dealers still have them. A 5 minute job.

Find a mechanic who knows kjet and has the equipment to set them up, get the warm up regulater drilled and system pressure set to 48psi, adjust the CO2 to about 1.7 - 2.0 and advance the timing a little.

Welcome to dub ownership.

That looks like its got a lot of potential,GTI 16v is a great choice and believe me 155k is by no means near the end of its life!! the alloys look like BBS RJs or perhaps BMW Spec BBS - either way they suit the car so well!!! i also notice you have electric Recaro seats- VERY COOL!!!.

Most of the jobs needed seam quite simple and can be sorted for a few ££ on a few weekends. HAve a browse of CLubGTI.co.uk - there is plenty of good technical advice and guides/knowledge on there!!

Looks cool, lucky to get the Recaro's as well!
I had one of mine lowered on Eibach springs and Bilstein dampers about 30-40 mil which was pretty nice.

Nice one!

Doesn't look like you have PAS (curved spoke wheel) so a smaller wheel is probably not a great idea for parking, but a Mk3 golf 3 spoke (non airbag) or corrado vr6 leather rimmed 3 spoke wheel is a direct swap and looks great & OEM.

It should have PAS - was standard on 16v models from 1990 onwards IIRC

Both the MK2's I've had had PAS and they both came with that steering wheel.

im fairly sure that PAS has never been standard on GTI 16v cars BUT that most buyers spec'd it from the factory since it is the top of the range car.

I have never heard of non PAS models having different steering wheels to PAS models. Every post 1988 MK2 GTI i have owned has had that steering wheel the only difference being some were leather an some werent.

Furry nuff, my first mk2 (1991 H plate 8v, 90 spec big bumper) had PAS and straight lower spokes, my second Mk2 (1989 G plate 8v, pre-90 spec small bumper) had no PAS and the curved lower spoke wheel pictured above.

My 90 spec 8v had no pas and the straight gti wheel and my 90 spec 16v has pas and the same wheel which I then swapped for a Vento one (bit smaller and firmer.)

Ive just spotted that in the GTI brochure although this only happened for a few months during 1990-1991. Having said that every on all the 90spec (1989-1992) 16v i have owned an ones that friends own they all have electric windows and PAS. The only 16v i have had without PAS was a 1986 model and that had the earlier 4 spoke steering wheel on it.

8v have different spec to 16v as they never had electric windows or central locking as standard nor PAS. 8v models only gained PAS, tinted glass, central locking and FRONT electric windows toward the end of 1990/beginning of 1991 when they then also got BBS alloys but were still not as well spec'd as a 16v
