Hello,
I have managed to bag a very nice early Mk3 16v. '95 M plate.
I'd like some feedback regards some ideas I have for replacement/ upgrading parts on it.

1. New Exhaust. I need middle & rear sections and I want a SS system, but I don't have too big a pair of pockets. And I don't want a drain pipe (or pair) sticking out of the back. tbh a SS but original looking pair of tailpipes would be the ideal.
I have looked at Milltek and a couple of others...

2. I have the 280mm brake discs and I would like someone to recommend some upgraded discs & pads for the car as wall.
Greenstuff pads. with black diamond have been all I have looked at so far. Would I need to upgrade both front & rear at the same time, or not?

3. I have the older 5 spoke wheels that have 205 50 R15 tyres, but there is an option to go for the more widely available 195 50 R15 tyres. obviously the width would make choice wider, but would it give up much grip? The lack of width on a 195, as opposed to a 205 section?

Lots of things to go at, I welcome any feedback/ ideas, etc.

Cheers PaulieC

Hi Paulie,

welcome to VW ownership!

1) exhausts - milltek , scorpion, jetex, magnex are all very good stainless exhaust systems. You might get a choice of 2 or 3 box system,3 box is the quieter option. These systems are all around £300-400quid new for a CAT back system and add another £50ish quid for a DeCat pipe (which can be swapped at MOT time ;-) ) BUT they can be found on ebay for less. My bro recently picked up a Scorpion system for £100 and we fitted it to his 16v today and its a very good fit/not overly noisey at lower speeds and below 4000odd rpm so 30-70mph is quite subdued but at full throttle it sounds bery throaty and not boomy at all.

2)Brakes - You can upgrade your pads and discs for around £100 for some Brembo discs and EBC greenstuff or Feredo DS are good pads. You can upgrade to 312mm brakes from later 2.8 mk4 or Audi TT or Seat Cupra R etc but you will need to run minumum of 16 inch wheels for clearance.

3)Wheels - yes you can get away with fitting 195/50 or 45 tires to your wheels as they are only 7inch wide. You will be hard pushed to notice the difference in grip, id say a 195/50 would actually be a lower profile so should have a harder sidewall profile and be less prone to rolling on the rim.

get some pics up when you can!!

Cheers Dave for the ideas, will post pics when I have taken some good uns, and its shiny! I thought of ebay for some bits but not really for the exhaust, though, good shout.

What about the new blade type wiper blades? would they be any better than a new set of the older style ones? Am I being chavvy? All I want is the best wipers out there!
Paul.

Haha it might be sometime next year by the time we get some pics if you are waiting for a good dry sunny day to do serious polishing.

Have a look on clubGTI.co.uk, Edition38.com , golfgtiforum.co.uk these sites all feature classified sections and usually have a good supply of parts and technical knowledge + how to guides.

The Aero wipers do look a lot more modern and being slim they are a little more discreet when not in use and you can buy them to fit the MK3 - again Ebay would be a better source than your local stealership.

I put aero wipers on my Corrado and they made quite a difference, plus I've had them on many company cars and they're so much better.
