s2 avant 1993 buying advice
Discussion
Hi all, I am going to look at a 1993 S2 avant on Saturday. Its priced at about 3500grand. Its obvious problems are dents ,bonnet and doors, and needs the tailgate at least repainted .
No history ,could be clocked as came from Germany in 1998 ,Showing now 110k miles but owner thinks it has more. It has an mot and apparently running mechanically ok but in his words needs tidied up and a proper service (maybe cambelt ,think this is costly). What should I look out for with this car when examining it. Any advice welcome re. Engine , and its other expensive wear items that would need replaced could look for to guide me if I should walk away or buy it.I had a few ur´s and a coupe quattro 20v so a bit about bushes etc, its LHD but thats ok but whats its worth raelly these days ? I was looking at a 2002 bmw 530estate but saw this cheap alternative , and I always liked the engine and drive of the s2.
Am I mad to think you could use it daily.
thanks Tony

He wrote a rather good buyers guide for these. I have a collegue with on for sale at the same price in the classifieds here. Good cars, deceptively quick.

Seems expensive per your description, particularly for a lhd - that price should buy a nice RHD one. They are truely great cars if it is still OK but will cause a lot of grief if it is not a good example. At this age I personally would not consider one unless it was totally original and would go for a 95 or 96 model year.
Historically they were tough cars but by now you cannot consider them in the same way. If you are not knowledgeable on cars then I would suggest you only take a risk on a really good one. If this one still interests you then take it on as an ongoing project or seek some advice from a specialist. If it has issues, even fairly minor, then it will cost you far more than the purchase price to repair.

i would agree on price, if its LHD for the UK then thats dear.
and i would also be looking at one as near to standard as possible, which is a hard task these days. daily runner no problem, most are over 100k and i know a fair few over 200k miles so they are capable of the miles without a shadow of a doubt.
But warning tweaked ones can get expensive, and if its got engine issues i would be walking away, wait for a good one. There were hotter aftermarket models. The Nothelle N300 and the MTM variants were very fast indeed. the s2-audi.couk site has all the magazine articles from the era.

Thanks for your comments , I took a look at s2central and s2forum but and its a big but. The photos I got today where more detailed and he told me the real faults , like dash no working properly ,talking about soldering wires to fix the computer scary.Parts of the the interior trim missing in and front valence broken with bumper ajar from bodywork and coolant pipework leaking and dent on the bonnet ,servicing needed and cambelt (which means pully and waterpump too) God I´m cheesed , I could fix it but I´m not sure I want a dog , I´ve dealt with this before and its timeconsuming and costly. And I bet the discs need doing and he says its making a noise turning to the right , top mounts tie rods , who knows. Your right I should look for a good one but in Spain thats bloody impossible as their cars are rubbish , the majority without history and treated like sheds ,even the new ones. You have it easy in the UK but I need lhd.
I´ll probably look for another one .

i would avoid to be honest.
Easy answer is you really want one is to go to source, ie germany
