Bit of a story....
I have a mk4 golf 1.8t 1998, it has keyless entry. When i brought the car it neva came with a headunit so i decided to put in my alpine... as normal i brought a adaptor plugged it in and blasted the music up. Now when i got home and got out the car the central locking would not work!! so i thought ****! i had locked the car from inside and creeped out the boot so the car was locked for the night.

next morning (i got back in through my boot!!) went straight to vw and they re-coded my key (£70) so my central locking works but told me it was becuase of my alpine headunit!!!!!!!!

i thought what has a headunit got to do with my central locking so taking VW's advise i brought a original golf headunit and all works fine ... for about 3 days....now all off a sudden the original golf headunit does not come on anymore?????

Has anyone had this sort of problem??? becuase this sounds right stupid to me that i cant put whatever headunit i like in the car i paid for becuase my central locking wont work then!!

any suggestions on how to get around this as i would like to put in my alpine and VW aint much of help! or anybody whos had this problem before??

thanks in advance for your replies

I'll go out on a limb and say that your problem is more to do with the keyless entry modification than the head unit.
Did the locking work when you bought the car ?

I'd second this...something somewhere isn't wired up properly would be my first thoughts...no way the HU should interfere with the rcl.

i was thinking on the same lines but VW themselves told that it was the HU... Wierd... im waiting for my new gamma head unit see if that works ... if not i will take it to a proper audio specialist.

so nobody else has had this prob??

Seems strange why the car never had a head unit in when you got it. Maybe the previous owner had a problem so just took the head unit out.

Is the keyless entry standard VW equipment?

yep the keyless entry is standard.. the lady owner before me had it from new and she asked for it to be keyless from VW!! for extra security..(iv got it all in my VW folder somwhere).or some crap like that... that maybe is the reason it never had no headunit ... hope it dont be the electrics .. i think iv been ripped off on the headunit sides of things ..

On a 10 year old car ? - Mercedes had only just started it on their cars, unlikely VW was doing it as standard on Golfs. Certainly neither of my 2000/2001 4 motions had it.
Are you sure its not just delocked ? ie the handle is there but somone has put a passenger side cap over the lock to prevent the key being used ?
VW delocked the passenger door from around 2002 onwards.

Is it not just remote central locking you have, with the lock barrels removed from the door and boot?

Keyless entry to me means you just walk up to the car and it unlocks with no action on your part.

It's been de-locked afterwards. Someone wasn't entirely honest with you...

I would not be suprised havoc if VW wernt honest becuase they seem to change there excuse for what happened every time i go in!
i went again today to ask them why my brand new headunit after 3days of use just decided pack in..and they said this time "it may be the wires" i thougth it was some "security block crap in the unit" the problem not the wires!! so im in a bit of **** now... i just have to wait on the new headunit to arrive to see if everything works fine.

My first time owning a VW and not liking there service at all
