I'm looking at estates at the moment, and it has come down to a BMW 5er or A6, I think.

A few questions:

1. Can you retrofit a towbar to an S6 Avant? I think I've read that the RS6 was never homologated for towing, does this also apply to the S6?

2. As there appear to be no 4.2 non-S Avants around, I'm choosing between the S6 and 2.5TDi - very different I know. What are the most common problems with either? I'm going to be using it to tow my M3 around, so either way it'll be an auto. Not too worried about economy.

3. Am I being daft ruling out the 1.9TDi? I do want it to be nippy/quick (hence why the S6 appeals!)

I've got a 2006 2.0tdi that I'm getting shot of in a months time. I had mine a Co car and it was ok. Its not a fast car but IMO even if it had a bigger engine I dont thing its the type of car that would make you want to go fast.

I tell you what though they are big cars. Add to that the fact that I get 39MPG out of it and its a decent allrounder.

I think the 3.0 tdi engine is a much better one. I thin the 2.5tdi is an older engine. At the moment I have the 3.0 tdi in the A4 quattro avant, and was tiold bz the dealer in 2005 when i bought it that the 2.5 tdi engine was an older version and more agricultura. Although I am sure otehrs will now disagree.

The 3.0 tdi pulls like stink and in the real world few cars will keep with it. I am awaiting delivery of a new A6 3.0 tdi quattro, so I must like teh engine as I have just bought anopther one....

Good luck with your choice, all of the cars sound good.

I have been told that you can fit a towbar to an S6 but havent tried to locate a supplier.

As for the car, Ive been very happy with mine. It handles very well for such a big car and feels smaller than it is. The engine / transmission work very well together and suit the car well. Its not ballistically quick but is more than adequate. The ride is fairly stiff and isnt for everyone. The brakes arent brilliant and best not to mention MPG. I get 23 on motorways and average about 20.

No specific problems Im aware of. They dont have the potentially troublesome DRC system that RS6s can suffer with and the gearbox doesnt have as much grunt to deal with. They go through brakes and tyres and the cost of replacememt is high, so Id want a big discount or a car with these recently done.

All in all, a nice car and now great value IMHO.

If you're not concerned about fuel economy then forget the 2.5TDI. The 3.0 diesel in the new A6 is far superior.

Far cheaper than the S and 2.5 is the 2.7T (twin turbo) petrol which I have. It is incredibly smooth and refined, and much faster than the 2.5 but of course, I'd rather have the V8.

My S6 Avant has got the Audi tow bar fitted.

Very neat installation, invisible when the swan neck is removed. All the electrics are hidden under the rear bumper.

I'd concur with the previous comment about mpg. 22ish on a run, 18-19 round town, and 20ish overall.

Overall i'm well pleased with mine, a lovely car.
