Very anxious over the outcome of the inspection of my engine by my mechanic!!
Started car this morning, no problem,
went to start it at lunch-time and would'nt start.
Took off engine cover and discovered water somehow got into the coil pack/sparkplug depression, this in-turn caused the no.2 coil to absolutely sh*t itself so badly that it scorched a hole in the engine cover and melted the coil loom. Coil pack and loom's obviously need to be replaced but I was cautioned that the worst case scenario is that the ECU may also be f*cked.
Anybody heard of this hapening before?
Will post up picks of components tomorrow if anyone wants to see!

I've seen it on V8 S4's and a few TT's. ECU's have always been fine, often blows a fuse so when you try to restart it wont, new fuse and away you go. We replace the melted coils and repair the harness (loom) as per Audi instructions.

This is making me less worried,
Your obviously a audi group mechanic?
Is there any way of preventing this happening again? Did'nt drive through large puddle/floods lately!

Its the coils, The ones we see fail haven't got wet they just shorted out. Might be coincidence that the water was there. Only fix is to replace all 4 coils, when you get a new one, it is a modified (updated) part and shouldn't do it again.

Might be worth a phone call to your VW dealer, just to make sure its not a good will item. Some things are covered outside warranty if they are common failures, I dont think they are, but they might well be, as we do a lot of them.

what you think of aftermarket air intake?? have a carbonio at the moment but the engine cover keeps coming loose and am always loosing lug bolts and rubber rings!! Would like the k&n cone filter type minus the engine cover!

I dont think they make any noticable difference to performance, give a nice throaty induction sound (if you like that sort of thing). The sticky oil used on some high performance air filters actually messes up the air mas meter.

I would always recommend using the standard air box and a performance filter element within it, if you really really want to change the airfilter.

If you want it to go faster and its a turbo, have it chipped. If its normally aspirated then you have to pay a lot of money for very little gain, just isn't worth it with modern cars, spend it on something else.

I have the panel filter upgraded (came with the carbon fibre intake) not looking for any more noise or anything!! Its just the cover is pis*ing me off!
Was going to get it remapped in the next few weeks, up to 235bhp (this is sufficient for fwd without lsd I think)
Had it on the dyno and read 210bhp the other week... Have catback exhaust fitted also!
