Just thinking about getting one of these. Is the suspension any firmer than the standard GTI?

At the moment I have a clio trophy and am looking for something a little bit more refined - as fun as my car is after a few years I am getting tired of jiggling so much!

yes, but it's still perfectly acceptable. great cars, properly quick, but they are not as well built as their image suggests. mine rattled like a toy box from day one.

i see. Out of curiosity, what are the running costs like? I am anticipating 30+mpg on the motorway and £250 for servicing. Does this sound about right?

as long as u r going for a manual then yes 30+ easily achievable if u stick to two digits.

never had a service, but wouldn't expect more than 250 each visit (tops)

it does get thru tyres if u are enthusiastic, but as do any powerful fwd car.

Have had a ed 30 for 15k miles. Mostly positive, and still feels special everytime i drive it. Echoing comments above, it is properly fast, especially with dsg (once warmed up). I live in suburbs SW london and we only get about 22 mpg, which i think is very poor - but this is pretty much my only negative comment, other than the wife curbing the wheels!

Edit to say (and answer your questions) - ride is firm, but perfectly acceptable and dont get too many rattles from ours. Last service was about £225 for ours.

does £16,000 for a black 5 door Ed 30 (07/57 with 16,000 on the clock) with DSG, NAV, Cruise, Xenon sound like a good deal?

not bad.

I've just returned from driving one (which incidentally I think is way overpriced). I think I will probably go for a standard GTI - although the ride is a bit softer than my current car, it is still pretty firm. Also the car doesnt subjectively feel as fast as my clio, but against the clock it probably is a bit quicker. I was slightly dissapointed with the DSG - it changes back into auto mode after what feels like 5 seconds if you dont touch the paddles.

Push the lever over to manual and it doesn't revert to drive ... you can then use the paddles as you wish. Using the paddles in drive is just a temporary way of ensuring you hsve the gear you want.

In manual mode the gear only changes from the one you have selected if the engine can't manage the one you are in .... i.e. you are in 4th but brake to a stop and don't use the paddles or lever to change down at all.

ah - thanks.

For some reason the salesman seemed to think I could make a judgement on a car by driving it 1 mile up and down the A11, and I didn't find this out in that space of time!

are you selling this car?

Saw a nice silver one today, but the spec wasn't exactly what I wanted, so am still on the look out.

Did VW stop making the normal GTI when they started the Ed30?

ED30 is supposed to be limited edition. ED30 over a standard GTI everyday of the week as the engine is much better.

the 2L TFSI engine remaps very well , 300 bhp with just a map and around 330 with an uprated fuel pump.

Yep, can definitely confirm it maps very well ! Mine was rolling roaded at 229bhp as standard and then had a Superchips Bluefin remap applied ... which when stuck back on the rollers showed 299bhp smile

It manages the power really well and is totally driveable - best bit of money I have spent on a car in ages biggrin

Rattles do seem to be very common on Mk V's, however if you look at the various VW forums there are loads of tips on how to fix them if they appear.

Maybe I have a lead right foot but I went back to an R32 from an Ed30 as I found it was all too easy to light up the front wheels even in standard tune. I dont know how people live with high power fwd cars.

I found getting it moving slightly in 1st before giving it full throttle was best .... and it is not too different when remapped - at least with the map I am using.

It is never going to be like 4wd though where you just plant your foot biggrin
