Hi,

I am thinking of buying a circa 1999 - 2000 model Golf V6 4 Motion and I wanted to know if it is fitted with a Cambelt or a Camchain. I always thought it had a belt but read recently somewhere that it was fitted with a chain. The reason I ask is that I want to know if I have to spend an additional sum of money to have the peace of mind that the belt has been changed if, indeed, it has one. I have always had Camchain cars so never really worried about it.

Thanks

not sure if they are the same set up as a VR6 but on VR6 the chains will last for years but the chain tensioners can fail from 100k-175k and can cost upwards of £500-600 to get changed.

Just as he said!

The chain should last for the life of the engine but tensioners can let go, meaning a new engine. A 3.2l bored out version of the VR6/V6 4 Motion 2.8l is fitted to the R32 and is famous for this problem.

Likelihood of the tensioners letting go? 1 in 5???
