focus st170 is very nice with full leather recaros
...and completely gutless. Also the interior is pretty ugly and cheap feeling (except for the seats wink)

And the Golf 4Motion is a whale.
i have 2 friends with golf v6 4motions, and have driven them and i dont think they are a "whale". they are not the sharpest steer but offer practicality, 4wd grip, and a couple of hundred horses.

st170 is hardly that gutless but yes not as fast as the rest of the list i put down, and i think the interior is pretty good actually well built but yes some of the vents/plastics etc could be better, not the end of the world though and you can pick one up for around £4k.

but like i said i would prefer a civic type-r or an s3 to either.

Or you could build another mk2 VR6 + a charger.

or more sensible option istead of a S3 if you like the idea of 4mo is a golf mk4 4mo for 4-4.5K and have over a grand left toward the charger ;-)

S3 is a good small hatch but it is small, rear leg room is poor as is access with the recaros, and the boot is pitiful compared to a golf 4.

But with the 4mo system, and a k04, they can be made quick, but it understeers like a barge as stock.
Some billies and new arbs and it is a capable machine.

As stock though, a bit underwhelming.

Smallness is less of an issue for TBB than for a lot of people (that aren't fidgits).

Tell me about the mk1 Audi S3 please.

I'm looking for a fast, interesting, well-put-together, reliable hatch (but not necessarily hatch) for a budget of about 5-6K.

It will be a second car, so needs to be semi-practical and properly-car-y to put people and things in.

Ideally it will be quick, or even better feel quick.

I don't fancy Impreza or suchlike as I'll rarely drive it anything like as fast as I think I would need to for that to be fun.

S3 makes me think we might end up being friends.
I used to have a 180bhp A3 Quattro on a 2001Y plate and it was a great car. Just enough room, yet still sporty feeling. I now have a TT with the 225 bhp engine that comes in the S3 - I'm sure the combination is great. The only downside is a 'good' MK1 S3 will be hard to come by.. Most will have been driven hard and parts can be expensive! I'd leave £1000 aside to cover maintenance costs in the first year! Seriously - you always buy someone else's problems.

Hello mate you really should have a drive of the cars you have listed and that hopefully will help your decision. I have a mk1 S3 and its a great car but does need tweaking to get the best from it. Mine runs 295hp and 320ft torque so it aint slow and changed some of the suspension parts so it handles a lot better. They are very well built and the interior is a nice place to be. My friend has a type r and is a good car but you really have to rev the nuts off it and the interior isnt that great and with the regards to the cupra r they are nice but the interior is not as nice as the S3 with a cheaper feel and being fwd you wont be able to contain the power, especially after a remap.

Happy hunting

P.s my pal has an evo4 and he cant catch me so that will tell you how fast the S3 can be!!
