Ibiza FR TDi - Views/reviews/advice

Aloha,

I am looking at buying an Ibiza FR TDi, likely to be 05/06 age with <30k ideally. Main reasons for looking at this over other warm hatches are looks, build quality for the price, 6speed, warm pace and hopefully decent mpg… as will be putting a lot of mileage on it.

Would appreciate any views/reviews/advice from previous owners including known issues to look out for when tyre kicking. Feel free to suggest alternatives!

The obvious alternative is the Fabia VRS (same engine). I have driven both and chose the Fabia for the better ride and sound insulation, although the Ibiza felt a little bit more lively.

Has anyone experienced the TDi 'spluttering' issue? On a few reviews of SEAT/VAG 1.9 TDi's there seems to be a spluttering issue with the engine at motorway speeds for an unlucky few - not clear what causes this but seems to be sporadic across the 1.9 TDi range. Any further knowledge on this would be appreciated!

There were two engine types for the 1.9TDI, an earlier engine with a code starting ASZ, and later engines with the code BLT. I'm not sure when the BLT engines were introduced - sometime around the 2005/06 cars you are looking at, but they are the ones with the problem. It is something to do with the exhaust gas recirculation valve and I believe there is some kind of fix.

Thanks for that - so the spluttering predominantly affects the Facelift TDi models?
