I had a 53 plate 2.0T petrol and it was a fantastic car but it was the Multitronic box that made it

I wouldn't buy one again, simply because I have had problems with both cars I have owned that had multi-boxes.

Do a search on this forum, for plenty of info and experiences about them.

Well I've just bought an 08 2.0 TDI Multitronic and I think its great! You hardly notice the gear change at all. Very economical too (well I guess it would be compared to my Chimaera!)

That's because there are no gear changes!

Run away and hide, and dont come out again, until another poor sole has purchased that car, and any other fitted with that gearbox. Hope I've made my point.

Well, I guess I must be one of the lucky ones! Either that or they changed the programming from 2008. Mine picks up straight away, no delay, doesnt roll back, works fine. If it starts playing up, it will go straight back to Tonbridge Audi, who have been excellent so far.

If its a B7 A4 and its got 7 speeds when you put it in manual mode, then it is a later version, still has problems but slight improvement.

Not to be confused with the 7 plate clutch's, thats nothing to do with how many speeds it got.

The new shape B8 A4 has the latest version, To new to say, but we have one or 2 over 35k and still no reported failures.

(2008 A4 could be either B7 last of the old shape or B8 current shape)

I'm just about to order a new A4 TDI with the 8 speed multitronic, unfortunetly i can't get a test drive in anytime soon. Is the this gearbox like the older ones that work continously without any actual gear changes or does it now 'simulate' going up and down the box.

I've heard a few opinions on this so feedback is appreciated.

It only simulates actual gears when in manual mode, is this mode you have (i thought is was 7) speeds to choose from and can go up and down with the engine pulling from low revs to the red line, much like a normal gearbox. Other wise its the strange CVT clutch slip type sensation. When you accelerate the revs go up and stay up and the speedo catches up, when you lift off the revs drop.

The ones in the New shape A4 are not as bad, it is a major revision. But I personally wouldnt buy one, and would advise you to make sure you drive one before you buy to be sure you are happy with the unusual sensation.

All that said, Many people do like it, and you may well do so after having a drive, as it is so smooth due to the lack of gear changes.

This should give you an idea

Normal acceleration of multi tronic in D (normal mode)

This guy puts it into manual from time to time, the display changes from PRNDS to 7654321 and he changes up and down with the steering wheel buttons.

Interesting thread this and would appreciate some PH input on an Audi A4 purchasing consideration.

I test drove a Multitronic (CVT) '58 A4 Avant 2.7 TDI S-Line at the weekend and was very impressed (seeking first family car for next 5 yrs). Having spent a lot of time going through historical threads on the Audi forum, does anyone have any input on the following queries to aid my thoughts please?

- new model Multitronic performance (the test drive I had was not overly long, but the car felt very smooth and comfortable to drive); any evidence or experience of issues or problems in newer model auto boxes?
- day to day difference between 2.0 (140 bhp) and 2.7 (190bhp). I felt it was noticeable but there seems little opinion on the 2.7TDi currently?
- experience of Audi dealerships, notably in general servicing, but also whether they ever consider discounts on nearly-new models?

Any thoughts appreciated...thanks in advance.
