Burning engine oil?

Our 112,000 mile 1.9 tdi seems to be using engine oil, as this is my first diesel engine car recently purchased I'm not sure if this is normal. Had oil and filter done about 3000 miles ago using quality Shell oil and find its now down to almost half way on dip stick. Advise appreciated.

Mine (Golf PD 130) uses about a litre between changes which I do every 20K. Taht's mostly motorway driving on cruise control so not working the engine hard.

Thanks Adrian, I guess my Fabia has used about 1 lt so far from mixed driving. I'm not even sure what the sump cap' is!
