When I took my car in for s ervice 2 weeks ago, I spoke to the salesman about buying a new A6 circa £41k. He said he would look at my car whilst it was there and give me a price (my car is a 2 yr old A6 Le Mans). When I went back to collect the car, he told me he didnt have enough time to work out a deal for me and would phone me.

Two weeks later.....nothing!

I can only assume he is selling so many cars that he doesnt need to sell another!

So much for dealers having it tough

Sorry to say, but this is just the 'norm'...communication (or lack of) must be built in to their training...

when I bought my current A6 the experience was completely opposite, ie very good and efficient.

Tell me about it. I asked 3 London Audi Centres to value my A4 against an actual used viehicle that each one had in stock. I was looking for an A6 Avant and had done my homework so all my questions should have lead them to believe I was interested.

2 Centres didn't call back (I left messages a further two times at each - both time with a receptionist who I absolutely knew would not pass the message on).

The 3rd Centre did call back, but said they didn't value cars over the phone. I happened to be passing a few days later so I dropped in. I asked the salesman to price my car (I remembered his name, he didn't recall who I was). He picked up his little book and after 30 secs said "£8k - £8.5k". I asked him if he wanted to have a look at it and he said "no, that's all they're worth". I said thanks and asked him for a copy of the Audi Magazine. He said that Audi had stopped doing it over a year ago. As I walked out, I passed a pile of them (all published that month) - so I picked one up, waved it at him and said "I mean this one. There a piles of them". No reaction.

I have decided on a 5 series touring instead. I'm sure you get crappy BMW dealers as well but they can not be as bad as the Audi ones I've used and the one I called has offered me £10k for my car which is now 2 months and 2,000 miles older than when it was worth £8k!

I don't know why dealerships haven't picked up on the this as a potential sales avenue. While your car is in for service, they value it, then pop a 1-pager in with your invoice with some costs of p/ex-ing against new, or against current second-hand stock.

That way you haven't wasted time with a salesman, and what better enticement than 3 of 4 vehicles on a list that will cost you a p-ex and £xxx.

This is fairly typical, my Mum had a similar experience with VW, tried to buy a Polo and tried to leave a deposit but salesman said he would call back in a few days to arrange the deposit. This was after agreeing extras final price etc over the course of nearly an hour.

Did he call back? Nope, Mum phoned back left a message a couple of times and never got a reply.

She went to Honda and bought a Civic brand new instead and has never had a VW again, only Hondas.

If the dealer hadnt been a twirp she would never had got into Hondas and would still be in VWs.

VAG dealers are very poor these days, which is a shame as the cars are excellent.

Seems odd, I bought my audi a few months back and the salesman virtually took my hand off. Was very keen to get a deal sorted, test drive straight away, had a look at my car and valued it straight away. All in all a very pleasant buying experience compared to what some of you seem to have had.

Only good experiences from my local stealer (Boston Audi). They were very helpful when I looked at px-ing my R32 for a TTS or S3, plus they were good to Mrs Brisel when she went in to test drive a TT.

Whether or not having 2 Audis serviced there already helped I don't know.

Pal of mine has been waiting weeks for delivery of his A5. Finally arrived a few weeks ago, delivered to his office. His Merc disappeared on the back of a low loader.

Highly excited, he jumped in the A5, to find this strange gear stick type thingy...he ordered an auto. Delivery driver apologised and disappeared over the hill with the car.

He's now had to go to the back of the queue again!

Thanks for the offer. I'll pass it on. He got his Merc back an Audi are paying for the car while he waits. But I'm sure he'd be keen to get his A5 sooner.
