I am not interested in how it works from a technical point of view, just from a users point of view. E.g. I just found out that I can still use the paddles in D or S, and don't have to be in Tip mode for them to work.

Where can I get more information about this kind of thing?

It works in exactly the same way as any other automatic gearbox.....

Just the fact that instead of the computer being allowed to decide when to change.... it lets you think you have control...

On this subject, I hate the way my A8 tends to change into 4th as soon as you remain at a steady 30mph around town. Does it upset the gearbox at all to be driven around in "3" rather than Drive? It makes for a much more relaxing experience and the engine's hardly ticking over anyway.

Drive - paddles give you temporary manual control, it will drop back to drive I think 1 minute after you stop using the paddles.

Manual - "Manual" control.

Thanks. I am pretty sure it does back to Auto when in D mode sooner than 1 minute, although I have heard S takes longer. What I don't understand is why the throttle response in Tip mode is the same as D, and only S mode makes it sharper. Why isn't there a Tip mode with the throttle response of S?

I agree with your comment about improved throttle response in S. I find the car quicker in S than it is in tiptronic mode, gear changes are faster too. As a result i hardly use tip mode, just occasionally if i want a slightly earlier downshift
