It's nothing special IMO. The whole character of the R32 is the V6

Let's hope it means the V6 versions hold their value better.

SO its a 2.0TFSI with 260bhp, a slightly detuned S3 then.

Nice, if you like that sort of thing.

If I was holding out for something like that, it will be when they put the TTRS engine in the S3 and we get RS3, that will be a serious car, But no word from Audi if they're actually going to do that. Of course that wont be fore sale at £25k, be more like £35k, at least.

Agree with Cuprabob. The whole point of an R golf is uniqueness. What's unique about this? They've put the widely used 2.0TFSI in it. Nothing special at all, why would someone buy that when you can have a Mk6 GTI which will do more or less the same thing. Ahhh a 3.2 in a Mk6 would have been amazing. Complete novice theory, why didn't they use the 3.0 supercharged V6 which goes in the new S4? Tune it down a bit, now that would be sweeeeeet.

I'm pretty certain the R model was expected to get a 2L from the first time it was mentioned. VW have most certainly lost their footing in the hot-hatch segment and are slipping badly.

Totally underwhelming. Doesn't offer anything you can't get in an S3, apart from worse performance- 0-60 in 6.5 compared to S3 in 5.7? How come?

And it looks completely ordinary-closer to a Golf GT in appearance, never mind a GTI, and this is supposed to be the top of the range! Don't even get me started on not having a V6 in it...

Won't be trading my R32 in for this.

I just cant see where VW are coming from. I think it will be a hard sale if its at the 26k mark, then + DSG, Leather etc and your at almost 29k! for a 4wd gti!!

How VW killed there R brand in one car!

Of course you could always wait for the driving reviews or to see/hear one in the flesh?

The V6 was never going to be in the picture due to lack of fuel efficiencies and weight.

Plus they've left room for the boy racers to make the car into something tuned/modded and tacky!

Ill certainly look forward to hearing the reviews and hope that im proven wrong. But the cars not made me put a deposit down, which after 3 years of happy 32 ownership from new i was hoping to repeat the process.

I knew we where loosing the V6 but i was being deluded and hopeing for something a little more special that the 2.0 tuned tfsi..

The V8 S5 is looking appealing again for me! smile

FFS the MkV R32 DSG / 8P A3 3.2 S tronic was 0-62 in 6.2.

The B8 S4 drivetrain, or maybe the R36 unit would have been better...

Yes, the TFSI engines are better for weight, emissions, fuel etc....but a hatch with an oversized NA engine is just so damn special.

You'de never get the front slung engine and drivertrain layout from the S4 in a Golf (which is not a large NA anyomore). The R36 lump would have been pretty ace, maybe the R32 will become the R36 at some point.

Anyway I don't really see the point of the car, I would rather have either the GTi or the R32, it just seems to be filling an unnecesary middle ground, although VW do love filling every single gap.

Hi

I quite like it?

The S3 is a bit boring until you remap it and put an exhaust on the car. With a few other mods it would get 350bhp+.

I do find the styling a little dull but thats typical VAG really. Understated, on the verge of boring?

Cheers Shaun.

I am not stunned by it but I don't really expect to be? You are right that if they had put the 2.5T engine in the car it would offer something different.

The MK5 R32 was not very inspiring really. Very flat and heavy. It needs cams, exhaust and intake to make it feel/ sound fast.

Cheers Shaun.

Hmm, you see i find my MkV pretty inspiring, it just does so much.. Yeh Id love 300bhp, but its soo grippy and useable. Maybe ive got a good one, but "when" it wants to go theres alot of poke.. Ive found its opened up so much more from 14k miles. Just seems to be getting stronger and stronger. And at above 90 leptons it really does carry on its pace..

And that noise.. its all about the engine note on this car really....

I just dont personally think too many people will bite at the tuned 2.0 engine... + If you go DSG youll be worrying about tuning it, well i would...

This has got the wife wants a top of the range golf feel to it...
Hopefully im wrong, lets wait till tommorrow when we get some more specs... smile

Very novice infact;) that engine is desgined to sit longitudinally in an A4, now which way round would it need to be in a Golf?... theres your answer why they wont use it in a Golf platform... biggrin
