Complete novice theory, why didn't they use the 3.0 supercharged V6 which goes in the new S4? Tune it down a bit, now that would be sweeeeeet.
Very novice infact;) that engine is desgined to sit longitudinally in an A4, now which way round would it need to be in a Golf?... theres your answer why they wont use it in a Golf platform... They could put the VR6 3.6 from the Q7 in it. Thats fit either way round, unlike the wider V6's in the other audi's.
It meets Euro 4 and is the same VR6 block as the 3.2

More News Guys..
Doesnt look so dull anymore
VW has slotted a 2-litre turbocharged engine developing 265bhp into the R – 35bhp less than the Ford Focus RS.
But the semi-automatic R model accelerates from 0-62mph in just 5.5 seconds – 0.4 seconds quicker than the Ford Focus RS. Yep, that got our attention too.
It will outgun the fast Ford initially but the electronically-limited top speed of 155mph means the RS has 8mph on its German rival.
Let’s be honest, it’s a classier looking model than the RS which screams ‘you want some’ more aggressively than any other production hot hatch.
The Golf R is all-wheel drive and with a manual ‘box still accelerates to 62mph in an impressive 5.7 seconds. With a combined fuel economy of 33.2mpg, it’s 21 per cent more efficient than the R32.

Its still just an S3 with a different (lesser) badge.
I wouldnt pay too much attention to performance figures, but 35 BHP down is a lot regardless how quick your 0-62 is with the semi reliable DSG/S-tronic box.
I'd have the ford its got that lovely Volvo T5 engine in there.
But all that said, I was born in Essex and had an escort with 200bhp in my youth, so perhaps my inner chav is showing.
