I need to sort my girlfriend out with a new car as she has a new job and her daily mileage has gone from 4miles a day to about 70!

She really wants a polo 6n2 and I need a bit of advice. I was thinking of getting her a 1.4TDI model, but with low-ish mileage in my budget they are like rocking horse !

I have seen loads of 1.4 petrol models for sale which initially look like much more for your money. The question is, over the next few years will she notice a massive difference in fuel returns between the two. The commute is mainly motorway driving and she doesnt drive quickly!!

Go for the polo, quite spacious inside considering the size. The 1.2 is slow as expected. Drive a few smile

Not a Polo - but a cheaper version of it ,same engine ,same parts etc -Fabia ,though 1.4tdi's seem rare .Both look much the same ( the old FABIA)

Thanks for the advice chaps, I have tried to tell her about Fabia's being cheaper etc etc but she is set on a polo. I have driven a 1.2 polo before back from Devon to Portsmouth and it was so gutless. Think im going to hold out for a decent TDI.

Hi Jim,

Any Polo would be a good option for your Mrs, they are small, light and easy to park plus just a medium sized boot for the Tesco shopping.
One word of advice, dont go for the GTI. As a man, I did and it was the source of much embarassment. No one could beleive I spent my own money on it. It was nose heavy, no performance to speak of and had silly blue dials at night. What a waste of money.

Hahaha!!

Very good advice. She would love a GTI but I have told her to stop getting carried away. She will struggle to control the 1.4 and the GTI has no extra boot space for the food shop or the dry cleaning and other household items like vacuums etc.

Hi Jim,

To be honest, the GTI only has 125 bhp which is pathetic so I really wouldn't worry about it.I dont know quite how VW can have the neck to call it a GTI. Surely an afront to the brand name.
You know your Mrs better than me, of course, so maybe the 75bhp one is a wiser choice if she couldnt even handle an understeerey hatch but better to air on the safe side of caution I guess.

So it seems you have answered your own question. But to surmise, get something low powered, easily repairable, dull but that does the job to an OK standard but wont excite, enthuse, inspire, make any form of statement, is unimaginative and is cheap owing to its significant lack of power then there you have it......every model in the Polo range.

HTH.

So Jim, did you get one of these dreary, diabolical shopping hatch's?

No, ended up buying a Toyota Aygo 1.4d. Perfect for the little lady, plently of room for three shopping bags and not to much power so she will keep herself out of trouble. She was pleased we found one in her favourite colour. . . . . bless.
