Most Golfs like yours have the Gamma Tape/Rado head unit, and an additional single deck CD Player fitted above it:

I *think* a CD changer would just be a straight swap for the single CD deck?

Part number for the changer is 6X0057110

Simplest option is to swap the existing single CD player for a 6 disk in dash unit, this is easy to do and doesn't need any extra cables at all. I got mine s/hand on ebay for £100ish when my toddler son pushed all the carpark change into the original CD unit a few years back.

Or you can keep the single CD and add a changer in the boot, means you need to route a long cable from dash to rear of car. This is a faff, so have a look behind NS rear quarter trim first just in case there is one already there. VW and aftermarket changers are (were) available so you will need a cable to suit.

However, unless you are really into CDs this is a bit old hat, why not just get a SD/USB converter widget, stick it in the glovebox and have your music as mp3s?

If you want to keep an original look of the car, the easiest and cheapest solution is to just stick an in-dash cd changer in the slot the single cd player used to occupy.

i've got a clarion cd multichanger (6 disk) with cable that can be mounted in the boot if you're interested... think the plug to connect to the headunit should be common but would need to be checked.
if you're interested let me know, can send photos, it came out of a 306 that i sent as a victim to the scrappage scheme

No

There is only one connection on the rear of the radio for an external device, which can be either a single cd-player, cd-changer or ipod/mp3 adaptor.
