it made it run smoother and you might get a 1-2mpg difference in economy, but not enough to warrant the additional 7p per litre of fuel
But a 2 mpg (25 to 27) increase is 8%, and a 7p increase in fuel price is 6% (110p to 117p), so that says it's worth it, especially if there is a side benefit of it running smoother as you say above.

Maybe my man maths is rubbish, and I've no desire to spend more if I don't have to, but it seems to stack up if you really could get (say) 2 mpg more, all things being equal.

It depends on how long you intend to keep the car. Forget about performance and mpg for now. If you intend to keep the car for a long term then take a look at this....

Not try to be offensive, if I am so bothered with the mpg I would pick the 3.0 Tdi Sline instead of the S4....but then I could be wrong!?!?!

Proper 99 RON makes a big difference with the 3.0T - if you need someone to verify this have a word with MRC on the subject. They swear by Tesco 99.

That's a sales pitch, pure and simple. I run Shell fuel in any case (95 for the S5 and 98 for the S8, as it's mapped for it) but in the UK your fuel comes from a very small number of import points and has an additive pack added - sometimes pipe mixed, sometimes dosed at the tanker.

To the post above, I said you might see 1-2mpg - it will vary by car and in most cases you won't see any real difference.

A quality fuel definitely matters for consistency.

As soon as you go near a remap the role of fuel completely changes - if an MRC stage 2 map is based on you running higher octane, then that's what you need to run to get the full power available from the map.

True (and no offence taken biggrin ). But given I already have the S4 and by simply picking up a different pump I could save or lose money I'm interested to know, as I'm a geek read

It that because their map is optimised for 99 though. Would they say the same about a standard car?

I could be wrong here too, but wouldn't you need to work the actual overall cost out in gallons too?
So 2mpg might be an 8% increase, but you'd need to times the 7p per litre by 4.5 (litres in a gallon) so the cost would be 31.5p extra for an extra 2 miles.

I think.....

Basic math is, if you do say 8500 miles per year - 22mpg @ 95 Ron would cost (at todays prices) £1914 and 24mpg @ 97+ Ron would cost £1867 - so a saving of £47 a year. MPG based on what i get right now on 95. However I have used 97+Ron for about 4 weeks and saw no difference in MPG whatsoever (nor did I notice any difference in the way it drove) so the additional cost is simply throwing away money (IMHO).

With regards to Dr G's comment regarding MRC and Momentum 99 - is that on a stock car or on a mapped one? As they themselves have said that on a stock car there is no value in running anything other than 95 Ron

Hi All,

The oil warning light just came on again, and I'm beginning to get worried.

I bought the car in November with 66k miles on the clock.

I've now put a total of 2 litres in since I bought her and the oil warning light has come on again.

To be fair, I do rag it when I drive it (although the Mrs is more sensible). It came on yesterday when I was booting it on an open stretch.

2 litres seems excessive though and I haven't noticed any leaks or stains on the road where she's parked.

Any thoughts welcome

Take it to the dealer and ask them to do a consumption test for you, assuming the level sensor is reporting the correct oil level of course

Sorry, I could have sworn there was a reference to a mapped car but I clearly just made it up. I put 95 in standard cars too for no reason other than it says so on the fuel flap.

Last time I did a long run in one I averaged about 31 on whatever 95 RON was available at the side of the motorway.

It's due a service so I'll get them to test it while it's in.

Hardly any miles done, 2k at the most.

Strange, the warning light has gone out again.

Might be a dicky sensor. Bit worried as I might have put too much oil in now!

Will get the stealers to install a dipstick!

Part number is 06E 115 611H (less than a tenner)

The dealer will claim one isn't available - part number is for the 3.2 engine or 3.0t used in the Allroad - think they stop listing it on age grounds from when they fitted electronic level sensors only.

Has anyone had their Black Edition Alloys refurbished at all?

I managed to kerb one of mine 270deg of the way round, tryng to park as close to the berk as possible in a very narrow road. the only way I can cheer myself up, is to 'assume' I saved the side of the car from being swiped.

I cannot work out if the lip is polished or painted, or how many times it could be refurbished?

I've done one of mine quite badly. I was going to go to a local place to get a price this week while I'm off work
