Thats the problem, a kerbing can be a full MM deep.

I might get one done and swap it to the offside rear.

Re my Bluetooth/Android problem above... I updated the Android software (but still 4.1.2.) and also unpaired and reconnected the device with the car, and it now works for incoming calls biggrin

Probably should have done one at a time to see which one actually fixed it, but I suppose it doesn't really matter as it now works bounce

hhhmmmpphhhh.... maybe spoke too soon. Had 2 calls this morning – 1 worked, and 1 disconnected, just like before. So maybe I have now an intermittent problem, which if often more infuriating!!

Car is in for service today, and said they would look to see if there is an update available, but even if there is it won't guarantee it will work, and they will (of course!) charge me for the pleasure of them updating it.

if you look under the bluetooth menu, how is it listed (as in what kind of device?)

Err, not sure what you mean, and the car is at the dealers now. In the Bluetooth menu I just know it shows up in the list of bonded devices, or words to that effect, it shows my phone (as GT-I1900, or something like that, which is effectively a Samsung Galaxy S2), and then my wife's iPhone. Sorry if that's not what you meant!

I think he's alluding to the 2 different ways MMI allegedly can connect - 'handsfree' is the basic 4 digit PIN method which uses the phone's internal antenna etc, or SIM access profile with a longer PIN and uses external antenna.

Personally ours, despite having 'phone prep high' with SIM slot, never connects va SIM access profile no matter what you do to it!

Mines connected through SIM Access and since the android update every now and then it drops the connection and then reconnects immediately. A bit annoying in the middle of a conversation.

I leave mine in SIM access as it forces me to leave the phone alone while driving. There are only limited responses to incoming texts, but that's a good thing.

Oh, never knew there were 2 ways. I just do it via the 4-digit PIN (the car gives me a PIN and I input it into the phone). I don't know what the SIM access is – I'm sure I didn't read about another method in the manual, just the PIN access way.

How do I do the PIN access and how is it different? If it's actually in the manual (2010 S4) and I've just missed it, just tell me to RTFM!!!

Its down in the bluetooth menu somewhere. IIRC it gives you the option of 'handsfree' or 'car phone'....switch it to the opposite of what you have now. It will reboot the MMI

It varies between pre-facelift and facelift models. On PF it should give you the choice when you pair your device - ours doesn't, despite updated firmware - same for Android or Apple devices....it's covered in the manual on ours but is curiously light on detail

Now you mention it I remember a right faff with my old car where android was updated, and fiddling I somehow managed to get the car into SIM access mode which then refused to connect via Bluetooth to the then Kit Kat android (different versions of Bluetooth apparently) and after 2 weeks I had to take it to the dealer to get it back on normal hands free mode as I couldn't work it out!

B8.5 is MUCH easier smile

correct.

some phones have issues with using SIM access profile (this is where all the functions of the phone are handled by the car it just 'borrows' the SIM via bluetooth. This has the advantage of more functionality but more importantly, the radio and antenna from the car are used, thus better signal and no impact on the phones battery.

the problem is some car/phones implementation of this can be flakey.

if this is the case, then go back to connecting just as a handsfree headset.

Facelift cars (or non with updates) can connect to both, it;s on a per handset basis, so if you have multiple phones, each one is treated separately.

My car asked for 1 litre of oil this morning. It's done 4000 miles.

Is this in line with what others are experiencing?

Yes, I serviced mine 900 miles ago. Has dropped about 200ml worth, I am going to replace my PCV valve soon.. As I have heard it cures the usage

Today's update rolleyes

1. Bluetooth connecting and disconnecting again on incoming calls. Not happy. Dealer says no update available (which I don't believe, given Adrian's posts above, but they say they can't offer anything).

2. MoT advisory on propshaft leaking. Dealer says needs new propshaft (£1100 part!!!!). Will be (should be) via warranty, which they will follow-up on Monday.

Having had a B6 S4 and then an S3 sport back prior to moving to my Discovery 4, I still would really like to get into a S4 for circa £20-£22k when I change again in 12 months.
My constant niggly annoyance with my last 2 Audis was oil usage, and whilst reliability wasn't an issue, a few niggles on the S3 did cause me rather an expensive 12 months.
The irony is the Discovery, whilst often joked about for reliability, has to date been very good and doesn't use a drop of oil.

I'm sure the issues mentioned in this thread are the exception, but none the less, I'm not entirely convinced Audi build quality has improved, in fact, I think it's fallen since the B6 and B7 era.

have you checked how you are connected?

as for the propshaft, how is a new one going to stop the seal leaking? (which end, diff or gearbox?)

No, job for today. Pub/rugby got in the way of looking yesterday!

Re propshaft, no idea. They just said there was a problem with it, warranty will sort it at no cost to me, so I didn't really ask too many questions (as, to be honest, I probably wouldn't really understand the answer!).

Edit: not sure I have this "SIM access". I can't find any reference to it in any menus, and when I look at how the phone is connected it just says hands-free. If I disconnect this, the only option to reconnect is handsfree.

The manual is very light on info, just saying I can swap between profiles, without saying what they actually mean. And there is a little note to say it only applies to cars with the SIM access profile, so I guess mine might not have it anyway? <..sigh..>

Hi all,

Well that was a good read smile Lots of good info in the thread, I'm hoping to get myself into a S4 if I can squeeze the budget and pick one up for sensible money.

The prices seem VERY much all over the place though, the manuals seem to be worth a fair bit less and ones with higher miles don't shift too well.

I think colour may have a big affect? Red doesn't seem popular, and I've seen one in the light blue which seems to have struggled as it's been reduced a few times, looks nice but I just cannot see myself in that colour, shame as its a 2011 car for £16.7k.

Do you guys think it's realistic I could get a 2009 car with DSG, B&O and under 70k miles for £16k? There was a red one up for £15k with that spec but it was red and in North Aberdeen (not a huge issue for me as I would travel). The manuals are so cheap, sub £16k for a main dealer one in Belfast with 53k, others for £15ish too, but I really want a DSG.

The book prices seem all over the place, from 15k-18k depending where you look. I'm not sure how much there is to be had off the main dealers prices, or those for sale privately, I've watched a few and they have been for sale for weeks if not months so I wonder if they are over-priced, or just lack of demand/hard to sell 15k+ cars privately maybe.
