B8 S4 Ownership
Discussion
Managed to have it fiited today at http://www.neilgarner.co.uk did a wonderful job and it sounds fantastic. Seems quicker to me too!
Around town it's rather dire but on a long trip to the UK and back I was comfortably over 30mpg. I think I'm at 22.5mpg average after 5k miles but that's with a lot of short trips and town driving.
Edit to add that I don't care though, I didn't buy the car for fuel efficiency or for short trips etc I have a mini cooper which we usually use for the short stuff.

Funnily enough an email from my supplying dealer has just landed in my inbox about winter tyres. Whilst I am sure they give much better grip, especially for the 2wd cars, my S4 coped remarkably well with last winter's snow and ice (as did the 2 previous quattro A4s I have owned) as long as you are reasonably sensible. In fact, on many occasion, I was one of the only cars in my turning (which has an uphill exit) to make it out, 4x4s included. Sadly, this meant I was one of the few car borne commuters to make it to work every day

point taken, previously had a B7 quattro, it was on 18xJ8.5 rimms with 245's, and whist it was OK, it was less than ideal last year (live in the rural countryside with valleys).was thinking of something like 205-225 winter tyres on narrower rims (and maybe smaller with a higher profile tyre if it will clear the brakes..)
what did the Audi Email suggest?
On another note, my S4 is due it's 1 year oil service and when booking it in, I was told they'd need the car for the whole day to carry out a workshop recall to replace my water pump. It seems Audi have finally admitted there's a problem with the S4 (at least those made before around April 2010) water pump and are preventively replacing them on cars going in for a service rather than waiting for them to go pop
From what I gathered from another (US) forum, the affected cars are those with VINs ending in the range 003862 - 048910 (mine is in this range)
It's not a recall as such I think so they won't call you about it but if your car's VIN is in this range it might be worthwhile calling your dealer.

They go bang without warning . Essentially, people are experiencing a catastrophic water pump failure without any prior warning and after random mileage. Some have gone after 1,000 and some after 25,000. The only warning is the water pressure failure and the "stop now" sign - combined with a sudden rise in coolant temperature. Can happen when engine is cold or warm, at the start or during a trip. It's roulette apparently.
Essentially, the earlier cars came with a plastic pump which appears to disintegrate randomly - the newer ones have a metal pump and this is what is retro-fitted. There are however signs that these replacement pumps can also fail but that could be coincidence. So far, AFAIK, nobody has destroyed an engine when their pump blew.
For lots of info, check out the US forums:

http://www.audizine.com/forum/forumdisplay.php/163... (I think they have some photos showing which pump is which in one of the threads)
or the German forum:
http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/neuer-s4-t1730583.h... (bloody long thread but it's all in there somewhere, probably best to start at the back and work forwards - at some point they start collecting statistics)

Mine is an 09 car, but the VINs dont tally up with the earlier post
Yeah I'm not sure whether that's a US-specific range of VINs and mine just happens to match, or they roll-over during manufacturing year or something.Min is scheduled for the 7th so I'll let you know what changes
