Hill hold assist is a cheap retrofit; 3 extension wires and a switch. Looks time consuming, though.

Only if you have the right ABS unit! You need the ABS controller ending in AT (from memory) for this to work. There is a "light" version you can enable through VCDS without installing the button.http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Project_HillHold.ht...

not sure what the big deal with hill hold are?
try using the handbrake! (as soon as you go to pull away, it automatically drops the handbrake)
^this, I have it and have never used it.try using the handbrake! (as soon as you go to pull away, it automatically drops the handbrake)
Yes the handbrake will auto release if you have it on - where hill hold assist (which is a stupid name for it anyway!) comes into its own is when you come to a halt, you can remove your foot from the brake pedal and the car will not move until you press the throttle. It does this with no interaction from the driver.
With s-tronic, it's not as good at dealing with steep hills as a torque converter - I find with hours that it can roll before you have enough throttle on to stop it moving the wrong way - and hill hold assist stops this. I had an A7 loaner with it (also with stop start) and I noticed the difference in behaviour compared to ours.
The USA market cars seem to lack the correct ABS controller but the majority of Euro cars have it - I've already added TPMS using the ABS rings, which requires the same ABS controller PR code.

Mine's US and has the right controller. Most US market cars seem to have it, actually. I was under the impression that the 1AS controller was a slightly older version (pre 2010?).Scuffers said:
Come again?
I have cars with both, and i really don't see what the big deal is?
I presume you just leave your foot on the footbrake whenever you are stationary then? It's not a big deal by any means, but used as intended it means you're not blinding the car behind in queuing traffic with your brake lights and on gradients where the s-tronic can be a bit crap it just makes it behave more like a torque converter autoI have cars with both, and i really don't see what the big deal is?
It's one of the better value options when the cars were new, but very few were specced with it as the sales literature miss-sells it and the dealers predominantly don't understand it.
My hill hold comment was just a throwaway one - if I had specced my car new I probably would have had it, as it was pretty cheap and might have come in useful.
But I still don't really know what it does, maybe the name confuses me! Isn't it really "something that automatically puts the parking brake on when stopped" rather than hill hold assist?
If you don't have HHA and actually put the parking brake on yourself when stopped on a hill, does the "hill hold assist" offer you any additional hill hold anyway?!
(ps. has anyone retrofitted a traditional mechanical handbrake? Now that would be a good retrofit!)

You have used it, because it's active all the time.
Certainly not active all the time on all A4s. You need to switch it on each time after you start the car. If it's active the handbrake light comes on green instead of red whenever you come to a stop. It's useful if you regularly have stop start traffic on any hilly section. Yes, you can use the handbrake but HHA makes it even easier.

Anyone know how to get the MMI to show TV or play DVDs etc?
I tried loading a video file onto the SD card but it wouldn't load.
I'd love to have screens on the rear headrests too, any idea of costs?
Cheers.
Might be wrong, but pretty sure vids won't work from the SD card. DVDs will play if you shove 'em in the slot... but you'll need upgrade to watch TV. (It's an optional extra on the build cost)I tried loading a video file onto the SD card but it wouldn't load.

They'll play from SD cards, it's occasionally caught me by surprise as I loaded up an SD card with mp3's and a few videos mixed in. They'll only play when stationary though (unless you vagcom it).The one I just checked the format for is an .mpg, but I couldn't tell you the codecs.

I did try a DVD but didn't have any joy, I'll try another.
Is it expensive to retro fit the TV function?
Dr G will know that... he'll probably see this, but if not, PM himIs it expensive to retro fit the TV function?
