At a constant 45mph, 80k miles is 222 8-hour days.
8 hours at 45mph every working day of every year for three years. What a job. eek

Are all 1.9 PD engines reliable? I have a '57 Jetta with a 1.9 TDi 105 bhp, engine code BXE. Currently it has a measly 28k miles but I'd like to keep it for much longer and wonder what I should expect.

Taxi I use has a 1.9tdi 105 PS motor and he's had 285,000 trouble free miles out of it (less a couple of clutches), serviced every 10-12k.

VAG Diesels - apparently quite strong long-lasting engines.

What sort of mileage are you on?

My Ibiza Cupra TDI, October 2004 model, is just touching, or will be tomorrow, 80k. A lad at work couldn't believe it and was saying i'll have to replace anytime soon. But i've always planned to keep it to 150k. So it's just over half way!
Bah ages left yet! My little Polo GT TDI only has 40K on it, planning to keep it for ages yet! biggrin

135k miles on my A4 1.9 TDi when I sold it, and it was still going strong. Only sold it as I fancied a new car. Bit sooty when you accelerated, but it did that with 40k on the clock....

We had a 300,000 mile ex-Taxi A4 1.9TDI in the other day for a free MOT and Health check.

Car was a bit of a barge, needed new arms and brakes and a wheel bearing, but engine was running nicely. Customer recently got it virtually for free, so wasnt worried just wanted to know how bad it was. Seller told him, was on its origional turbo and only 2nd clutch and appeared to be the case.

Sounds right though surprised by the arms mine at 267 have yet to show any issues. Clutch dying was a bit naff though it was the bearing but did clutch same time.

A mate of mine used to change his car every two years because he did big miles. He bought an a4 tdi and vowed not to change it until it gave him trouble. Its now got 260K+ miles on it and going strong. No real issues to report. Hes aiming for 350K miles

Its a battle tbh. Yeah o the cars generally really reliable. Its however had a couple of hiccups of late and also i simply have moments where i just want something different and have to convince myself its worth keeping..

+1 Had similar thought myself with 172K on an '02 Mk 4 Golf 1.9 tdi pd, was still on original turbo, no major engine or transmission issues, but the climate would go a bit haywire in heavy rain, the steering coming off full lock would make strange groaning noises, both fixable I fancy but I also fancied a change, needed more space, and 8yrs time for a change.

So I'm just beginning to appreciate the qualities of 'waftability' of a 2.7 tdi S line A6, the handling is nothing special, I really think the engine would have been better suited to to a tiptronic, but still 'appear' to be getting 45mpg, and it's relaxing like being sat in the library. Who just called me an Old man?

Yup i suppose their impressively comfy waftiness is what has made them a popular repmobile and given the brand a bad name.
Doesnt make you old at all though.

Mine has recently needed a new pulley assembly for the alternator and then a new alternator (i think the alternator was failing and seized and caused the pulley to lock up and break things. Other than that its been simple maintenance and recalls mostly.

The 1.9 pd is a very very good unit 10k oil changes and filters it never went wrong gave the impression it was quick when you drove it and certainly overtook many cars so guess it was quick ish 115bhp & 206lbf

Mate has the 130bhp & 236lbf not a thing wrong with it in over 5 years and his was 4 years old when he got it.

Another post in the general gasssing is stating the shocking reliability of the mk4 golf platform and all power plants - seem fine in my ownership and others I know so guess it's someone who is unlucky or with a vag grudge

My old man has a mkIV Golf pd130 that's on 120k with nothing other than routine servicing. Still feels solid too.

.. from what I can gather, most of this thread refers to the 1.9 diesel engine across the range.

What about the newer 3.0TDi that VAG are throwing in the 'newer' larger cars?..

Sold my 2003 Audi A4 quattro 1.9tdi at 72k to my neighbour. I had cambelt and new turbo (under warranty) done at 58k. It's still running like clockwork at 150k.
