Audi TT Mk1 - not sure why it's got such a bad reputation?

No, that's not what I'm saying. The car was not neglected, serviced regularly and well looked after.
The OP made reference to the Quattro system and I was simply pointing out that it can at times be unreliable.
You claim it can be unreliable based on ONE experience? The OP made reference to the Quattro system and I was simply pointing out that it can at times be unreliable.
If i had a car and it broke down once in 10 years, i wouldn't say to someone, 'yea its at times unreliable'

I said "Wouldn't put too much faith in the Quattro system" and give an example of it causing problems which totalled the car, you then dredged up some potty argument off the back of this accusing it of being badly maintained. If i had a car and it broke down once in 10 years, i wouldn't say to someone, 'yea its at times unreliable'

Read through all the responses & as hoped somebody remembered that Audi had to quickly fit a rear spoiler because of instability issues. The problem was of course the spoiler looked just like what it was a last minute panic solution as it was a simple slab of plastic.
I also recall 2 versions, the least powerful (1.8?) having a single exhaust pipe exiting through a plastic moulding that looked as if was easily exchanged for one that facilitated the second exhaust pipe of the more powerful version.
For many the design might have been lifted from fair ground dodgem cars & their non-aggressive soft curvy shape inevitably appealed to the fairer sex.
Try as Audi have with attempts to straighten the curves, add big clunky wheels & make the thing more noisy the rotund shape is largely retained & I contend that by a substantial percentage more females drive them than males. Witness the many conversations & forum posts that include, "My Mrs..... or My girlfriend....
Sadly similar stuff is trotted out regarding the Boxster/SLK/MX-5/Fiat 500 & for you oldies the Triumph Herald & Spitfire, the Sunbeam Alpine & the Austin Metropolitan (sorry you have to be VERY old to remember that clunker).
Then there was the Micra convertible ..................... oh sorry REALLY off topic now, I'm off to take another pill.

Wouldnt put too much faith, implies that you don't consider the TT very reliable. Yet it only failed once in your ownership. And tbh is the first i've heard of it, so a bit of a moot pointEdited by AJXX1 on Sunday 27th March 17:44

I wouldn't worry, some people on PH can't bear to stand any criticism of their pride and joy. Bit like when I was said to be "crap at buying cars" when I had 2 unreliable RS Clios, one of them almost brand new. I was crap at buying cars because they never had any problems with theirs, which obviously meant mine, including the almost brand new one, were completely tired and abused examples! If an engine only blows up once people lose faith in it, that's perfectly normal human behaviour. Welcome to Earth.WJNB said:

Surely the porsche 911 is also non agressive and soft and curvy?I also recall 2 versions, the least powerful (1.8?) having a single exhaust pipe exiting through a plastic moulding that looked as if was easily exchanged for one that facilitated the second exhaust pipe of the more powerful version.

But to put people off said car because it happened to you and no one else is unreasonable. If you got short changed at Subway, once, 5 years ago would you still tell people to avoid Subway, even if they tell you it never happened to them?
AWD failure happened to me too on my much later TTS at 26K miles, this was due to the Haldex pump dying. When accelerating hard out of a tight bend which was normally no problem, I got a lovely surprise combo of wheelspin and torque steer which nearly put me into a verge.

iirc you complained about your supercharged MX5 notrunning properly with s/c in situ, you complained about your MR2 turbo as well!

An unreasonable one, that's the point i'm making
Think what you want to be honest.Again, the OP made reference to the Quattro system helping them out in a tricky situation and I simply presented my story when it went badly wrong and the car ended up in a ditch.
I was not trying to put people off the car or anything of the sort - I was just simply giving an opinion based on my own experience.
Here's another opinion; you've pulled an entire half arsed argument out of your arse for no reason whatsoever other than to be a knob.
No idea why your having such a go at me for presenting my opinion.

The same behaviour is being displayed in other threads too, I wouldn't worry too much.Again, the OP made reference to the Quattro system helping them out in a tricky situation and I simply presented my story when it went badly wrong and the car ended up in a ditch.

Looking back, maybe some of the bad reputation came from the handling mods ...rather than the lack of them
We had the initial favourable reviews
Then there were the grumblings that started in the German press....
....and then came out over here
Then came the fixes....
Which some mags were not convinced by

Interestingly all the people who have crashed were speeding!
Chris Meek's example doing 91mph dabs brakes whilst turning left, not even a great idea at 70 mph.
Seems to me there was an element of 'throwing the baby out with the bath water' re the handling mods. I suspect if it had been a supercar like a Carrera GT or something similar they wouldn't have been pressured into changes.Chris Meek's example doing 91mph dabs brakes whilst turning left, not even a great idea at 70 mph.
Reading the reports on the early cars it appears that Audi set it up to be very edgy - its affordability was partly its downfall

I'm sure you are right. If it was something exotic it would just be put down to driver error or excessive speed.Reading the reports on the early cars it appears that Audi set it up to be very edgy - it's affordability was partly its downfall
