Audi A4 convertible 1.8t 2004 manual.

Light coming on intermittently - when it does car doesn't start very well - turns over a while before firing up.

When it stays off car is fine.

Due to drive down to Southampton Saturday - is this OK?

EPC is Electric Power Control - maybe a fault with the ignition systems?

Coil packs come to mind - do you have any other problems, misfiring or anything?

nope once its running its fine. Coil pack sounds reasonable. I presume it will have logged the reason it put the light on?

Yes, 5 mins with VAGCOM will tell you all you need to know.

If you post up another thread in your regional section asking if anyone local has it it will save you a few quid rather than taking it to the stealer

I now have the error code

16707 P0322 - 004

Ignition distributor engine speed inout circuit no signal.

It did also report that it was intermittent.

I assume this relates to a specific sensor - can someone tell me which one?
Is it a case of buying a new one and fitting it or is it more compicated than that?

Would suspect a problem with crank or cam position sensor...

Check wiring to both... intermittant issues usually point to a dodgy earth or somesuch perhaps?

Will be the crankshaft position sensor - they usually log a sporadic fault when they are on their way out. Only time its a static fault is when they dont start at all smile

Can you give me some more specific info where the sensors are - its a 1.8T A4.
I am mechanically competent but haved never fiddled with this car (or any VW / Audi) till now.

The crankshaft sensor or it may be referred to as a engine speed sensor on my 1.8T is located near the oil filter housing.

It's a small black plug with a black wire going to it, it's held in with a 5 or 6mm hex bolt, the sensor has a little O ring on it that holds it quite firmly in place in the engine block so can be a little tricky to pry out.

It was just under £100 from VW for mine!

Is it a simple remove / replace job or does it need to be setup in any way clearance etc?

Thanks

Does the bolt pass through the middle of the sensor or is that a knock sensor or something?
I can see a sensor with wire attached inline with No2 cylinder not far from the oil filter - but the sensor isn't the same as the one I've been supplied (Non Audi).

Edited to say I have been given the wrong sensor - but the pic of the right one still doesn't look like what I thought was it.

I doubt this link will work but I'll post it anyway - this is what it should be.

Round sensor with bolt through the midle is a knock sensor.

Crank sensor will be very similar to this, check your engine code, this may even be the one. BFB and BEX engine codes.

Thats exactly what I was expecting to receive - but I've been supplied with a sensor that looks right but has no cable just a socket - looks like its a part for a VW/Audi but not mine.

I'm still not totally clear where it is located but I'm sure a proper look at the weekend will find it - I think I've found the grey connector on the bulkhead so I'll follow that.

Looks a bit of a bugger to get at irked
