My parents are buying a 2006 '56' plate Octavia 1.9TDi and I'm keen to know if it is likely to have a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

If it does then I can advise them of the adjustment in driving style required to avoid incomplete DPF recycling and possible expensive repairs.

1.9 I don't believe will. I think it was something fitted to the 2.0 TDI engines from about 2008 onwards. Earlier 2.0 TDIs didn't have them - My Dad's TDI Golf mk5 sure didn't (2004) To my knowledge, no 1.9 engine ever got a DPF - In the newer shape cars, the only 1.9 is a 105bhp PD engine. Again, just a simple catalytic convertor only.

PS: My knowledge of cats is limited as my 1.9 TDI has not been running a cat since about 2004. biggrin

In 2006 it was only really the 2.0 TDI PD 170 that has a DPF. 1.9 TDI PD 105/ 2.0 TDI 140 won't have unless it was specified when new (Unlikely). The common rail diesels (1.6/ 2.0) have them as standard but they didn't come in until 2008.

The Golf Bluemotion and a few other cars fitted with that engine did get a DPF, but only really 2008/ 2009. They have stopped making the 1.9 now.. at last
