Last week I came out of the car park after work and the oil level warning light came on. I thought nothing of it, got home and checked the oil level after it cooled. It was fine, so thought maybe the sensor had just had a bit of a bump after going over the speedbump at the car park exit.

Woke up next morning, oil level warning light is still on. Opened up bonnet, checked dipstick and level is still fine. I topped up a little bit to increase it nearer to the higher end of the 'optimum' level. Closed bonnet, turned key and warning light is still on.

After all this I was running late for work then, so got in and drove it to work. Came out of work, saw my tyre was low-ish so went to the petrol station to put in some air (Oil level warning still on). Pumped up tyres, turned key and warning light is now off....

When I turn the key, the oil light doesnt come on the dash at startup. I can't remember if it used to or not. Does it? And if so, does it mean my sensor is now knackered and I need a new one?

Are you sure you're not mistaking it for the tyre pressure monitor? (if you have one)

Unless someone has re-wired the dash at VW factory, this was definitely oil level. And also came up on MFD as "Check oil level"

If it was the tyre monitor, adding air wouldn't switch it off as it needs to be reset using the button.

The oil light should light up when you switch the ignition on. If it's not I would get it cheked ASAP

By get it checked, do you mean a VAGCOM scan? Or get it up on the ramps? I am presuming the oil sensor has taken a knock or the wiring has come loose, as I keep checking oil level and its fine

Anyone any ideas where the sensor itself is located?

Yes, I mead a VAGCOM scan. Even if the level sensor was faulty, the oil can light should still liht up when you switch on the ignition.
