Yes, fuel economy has improved greatly. Like I said, you can easily achieve 40mpg on a run over 10 miles with speeds of 60-70mph

True, you will save £3000 on the Fabia but, let's face it, it's not the same
id rather have the polo just look at it biggrin

did you spec anything else other then xenon's worth the extra ?

We chopped in a Fabia for the Polo GTI. The plastics in our '08 Fabia were very brittle. Surprisingly the VRS has pretty much the same plastics.

The Polo has a vastly superior interior. Nobody should think that in buying the Fabia you are getting the same car just £3,000 cheeper.

Best extra I have gone for is paint protection film for the front end.

Any word on the car yet Huw? I am going back to my old thread to try & ignite some inspiration!! I was asked to write a mini-review type article for VW Driver Magazine (hope I can mention this Neil??).
I never expected it to be this difficult - I was good at English in school too!! frown

3 doors,
Flash Red,
Bi-Xenons,
Winter pack (I live in the Highlands hehe)
And the touchscreen radio - can't remember the name for it for it wobble

Delivered about three weeks ago now. I bought via a broker and the car came from a London dealer. I paid a little extra for delivery. The car turned up outside the house at 6.15 in the morning.

Mine is a three door in white with climate, comfort pack and DAB radio. I have also had some paint protection film fitted over the front of the car.

Now it is run-in I can give it the full beans. Acceleratively I would say that it will give my Caterham a run for it's money, until it comes to braking and cornering. I like the DSG 'box once you're on the move. I do find it a bit jerky on pick-up in stop-start traffic or when starting off briskly.

Unlike some I actually quite like the tartan seats. It breaks up what would be a typical German interior.

Whilst firm I find the car well damped.

I know some have criticised the car for only having 180 ps when the Clio has more. That said and for 95% of my time behind the wheel if feels sufficient. I do about 20,000 miles a year and need a car that won't get on my nerves by being too uncivilised on longer journeys.

All in all my experience so far has been positive.

Interesting reading Huw, glad you're enjoying it.

With regards to some peoples thoughts that the 180ps of the GTi is lacking against the Clio, I bet that at the majority of points across the rev range, the super/turbo chargers are actually producing more power in the Polo. In normal give and take driving on typical British roads, I reckon there would be nothing in it.

^^^ The only time the Clio will be faster is north of 5,500rpm.

At which point, the Clio's MPG will be piss-poor and your ears will no doubt be bleeding...

Plus, driving > 5,500rpm will make everyone think you are 17 years old, or on the way to Maccy D's, innit.

Forced induction = win.

The thing is with the Polo, I reckon it'd give most 'average' drivers in most hot hatches a decent run for it's money in regards to acceleration due to human error in a manual. However, though the handling is not exactly diabolical, I am sure the likes of a Focus ST or Clio RS would be all over it like stink on a pig in the corners!

There are plenty of cars that will be faster on the right road on the right day and with the right driver.

There is nothing in the class that offers the same blend of performance, usability and quality. This is what VAG performance cars major on.

Polo will be 90% as quick for half the effort wink

As with anything, depends what you want from the car. I'd take the Clio for a Sunday morning balls out blast but the Polo will be far, far nicer to live with.

In the glove box you have an MDI output which I use my iPhone on. Without checking the car I can't remember if this is through a USB - I don't think it is though? The stereo also takes an SD car and there is an AUX output too.
I think you could buy a lead that would allow you to connect a memory stick.

Sound is decent enough though I am no big fan of 'blasting out my beats'.lol.

You thinking of getting one?

Like the polo, but I think the fabia would be the better buy, not quite as good build quality, but just as good a drive and the 3 grand saved would be a big plus with residual values probably very similar, the old fabia vrs holds it's value very well.

Arrogant pricks. Never happened to me as I have only had two cars but I have hear the stories of dealerships doing that...their loss.

I'd try for a test in the Polo and if they say no, go and buy the Skoda/Seat - just to prove a point!
That, or go to your next nearest dealer and test drive the Polo there - be a shame to miss out on a car like this - you'd never look back!;)

One of the reasons I had a third vRS was down to my local Skoda dealer, they are lovely people. I have popped into the VW/Seat dealers more than a few times and I've always had to make the utmost effort with them, and as an ex-car salesman myself, it's not like I don't know the score in a showroom.
