hello.. i was wondering if any1 can help me..
my car sometimes wont go into reverse and 1st gear. when its in 1st and i just try
to put in back into N it wont let me unless i really pull it hard.
also if im in 1st gear and the clutch is down it slightly bits :S very confused!!
People have told me it could be something to do with the selector mechanism
or the gear linkage. hope this makes sence.

Original clutch? They don't last long in the diesels, particularly not if used around town.

Yeh I think it's original. Eurocar parts do a clutch for £250. Or do u think I should get 1 from Audi??

symptoms sounds a lot like what I had when my system ran dry of clutch fluid. You get graunchiness and it struggles to come down out of a gear. I think what usually fails first is the master cylinder - the clutch is probably OK if you can put in to say 4th at 30mph, floor it, and it doesn't slip or vibrate during acceleration. Worth just checking the levels in the brake reservoir (same pot for the clutch too)

You should definitely investigate the problem before spending money, as pointed out above if the clutch will take punishment it's entirely likely it's a hydraulic fault.

what? my audi 80TDI got to 212,000 on the original clutch, and the only reason that needed doing was my fault pulling out of a junction giving it full beans and dropping the clutch...

I have the same problem and only had the car for 6 weeks! What was the fault and what did it need doing??

I think your car has the "cable change" does it not??
If so, it may just be a simple case of adjusting the cables that operate that selectors. They do stretch a little over time.

Try this:

When it wont go in to gear, turn the engine off, if it then slips in easily then its a clutch related problem. Most probably a dragging clutch through lack of disengagement.

It does slip back in gear when the engine is off. A new clutch then?

Possibly not the clutch, a release bearing or spigot bearing could be at fault, or bad adjustment. These have DMF flywheels don't they? in which case I'd be looking at that too.

Either way its a clutch out to inspect, so might as well replace it all while in there.

Out was the gear selector nut on top of the gear box it was loose So done it up nice and tight... Job done lol smile)))

hi, i have got exactly teh same problem with mine a3 2.0 tdi could you tell me where to find this nut do i get to it from underneeth the car or from the top do i need to remove the air intake box

my old Audi 80tdi (sold to a colleague) is on 280k now and still on the original clutch

Remove air intake look down and u will see the gear box ad on top of that there is a selector nut ul know if it's loose cos it will move loads! Tighten it up! Also use locktight or something!!

Hi, can you give me a bit more info about this as i have the same problem. Do you mean the air intake in the engine? WHat is the gearbox selector nut look like? (pics would be fantastic)
